Lady Knights hoops heading to the 'Big Dance'

LAURINBURG, N.C.The St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s basketball team eagerly heard their named announced as the No. 8 seed in the East Region of the 2007 NCAA Division II National Tournament during an internet broadband broadcast on Sunday night.

“It is so exciting to have the opportunity to do something that the program has never done before,” said third year head coach David Johnson. “I am especially happy for our seniors to have the opportunity to go out making the NCAA tournament after having helped build the program to what it is now.”

The Lady Knights earned an at-large bid to the ‘Big Dance’ for the first time in the program’s NCAA Division II era while playing in their most successful season in the same 12-year span. St. Andrews will enter this coming weekend’s regional with an impressive 20-9 overall record.

The eight-team East Regional will be held at Glenville State University in Glenville, West Virginia, on March 9, 10, and 11. SAPC will face the host Pioneers in the first round on Friday at a time to still be determined. Glenville State is currently ranked No. 3 nationally and maintains a 30-2 overall record.

“This is a big step for our program as we try to continue to move in the right direction,” added Johnson. “We will be able to look back on this accomplishment and talk to recruits for a long time about making the national tournament.”
