HARTSVILLE, S.C.—Junior forwards April Johnson (McColl, S.C.) and Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.) each supplied No. 6 East Region ranked St. Andrews Presbyterian College with a double-double on Thursday evening en route to a 60-54 CVAC women’s basketball victory over host Coker College.
The Lady Knights, who end the conference regular season with a third straight victory, improved to 19-7 overall and 15-5 in the CVAC. SAPC spoiled the Lady Cobras (6-20 Overall; 4-15 CVAC) senior night.
St. Andrews will enter the 2007 CVAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 seed Mount Olive College in the tourney’s quarterfinals on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. The Knights will finish up the regular season with a tough non-conference tune-up when they host No. 8 East Region ranked Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
It was a tight first half with the Knights taking a two point (29-27) lead into the break. Neither team was exceptional from the floor, with Coker shooting 33 percent and St. Andrews shooting 31 percent.
The Knights turned up the intensity the second half and were able to improve their shooting to 43 percent, while Coker also turned it up shooting 37.5 percent. However the difference came down to St. Andrews second chance points, 21, compared to Coker's nine. SAPC also dominated the glass out rebounding the Cobras 57-36.
Norman netted game-highs of 17 points and 14 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season. Johnson added her second double-double of the year tying her season-high’s of 14 points and 10 boards. Johnson, who leads the CVAC in blocked shots per game, swatted away three more against Coker.
Senior Marquita Prichard (Havelock, N.C.) and junior Jessy Perkins (Goldsboro, N.C.) chipped in with eight points apiece. Senior Ashley Mitchell (Washington, D.C.) once again provided court stability with her 36-plus minutes of playing time while contributing seven boards, six points, and a game-high three steals.
Temeca Spain's double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds led the way for the Cobras. Henna Koponen and Rebecca Kolbeck had 10 points apiece, and three and four rebounds respectively. India Elliot finished her final home game with seven points and three rebounds.
