LAURINBURG, N.C.—St. Andrews Presbyterian College dominated the paint to hold off Lees-McRae College 61-56 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women’s basketball action during Saturday afternoons ‘Senior Day’ in Harris Court.
The No. 6 East Region ranked Lady Knights improved to 18-7 overall and 14-5 in the CVAC after all five SAPC seniors scored en route to the conference win.
Senior Dianca Jones (Columbus, Miss.) scored a game-high 30 points for the Lady Bobcats but they still fell to 8-16 overall and 6-11 in the league on the year.
St. Andrews led for most of the first half but a late 9-2 run gave the visitors a slim 27-25 advantage at the intermission. The Knights only shot 27% in the first half while LMC connected on 44%.
The game remained close until senior Ashley Mitchell (Washington, D.C.) broke the eighth tie of the game with three made free throws with 4:24 left to give St. Andrews the lead for good. The Knights kept the momentum and built up a seven-point lead in the final minute and coasted to the five-point victory.
Junior Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.) led the Lady Knights with her ninth double-double of the season. Norman scored a team-high 18 points. Norman’s game-high 16 rebounds helped SAPC dominate the boards 46-29. The Knights crashed the offensive glass for 27 boards that turned into 18 second effort points.
Mitchell finished with nine points, six boards, and a game-high six assists. Senior Karen Foggie (Charlotte, N.C.) bucketed eight points, pulled down six boards, and made two steals. Senior April Henderson (Woodbridge, Va.) tallied six points, three assists, and three steals. Senior Diana Martinez (Woodbridge, Va.) totaled six points and two boards. Senior Marquita Prichard (Havelock, N.C.) chipped in with six boards and four points.
SAPC responded from its poor shooting first half by making 52% of its field goals in the second half to finish the game at 37% accuracy.
Jones scored her 30 points on 13-of-23 shooting while making six steals. Brittany Roberson (Salisbury, N.C.) snagged a team-high nine rebounds for the Bobcats while Cameron Crapps (Elizabethton, Tenn.) added nine points.
St. Andrews will close out the CVAC portion of their schedule on Thursday when they visit Coker College (Hartsville, S.C.) at 5:30 p.m.
