BELMONT, N.C.—Junior forward Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.) notched her eighth double-double of the season including scoring six of the team’s 11 points in overtime lifting St. Andrews Presbyterian College defeat CVAC rival Belmont Abbey College 58-51 on Thursday night in the Wheeler Center.
The No. 6 East Region ranked Lady Knights, currently riding their most successful season in the programs NCAA Division II era at 17-7 overall and 13-5 in the CVAC, have secured a first round bye in the 2007 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Tournament. SAPC will also be hosting a quarterfinals game in the tourney on Wednesday, February 28 (time TBA).
Norman finished with game-highs of 17 points and 18 rebounds. Norman’s total of 18 boards, which ties her season-high, helping St. Andrews dominate the glass 53-31.
The Abbey led for most of the first half and built a nine-point lead, 20-11, midway through the opening period. St. Andrews rallied back with a 14-5 run to tie everything back up at 25-25 but a final minute shot by Crusader Courtney Naquin gave BAC a slim 27-25 halftime advantage.
The game stayed close for the remainder of regulation with SAPC pulling out the biggest lead of the second half, 45-39, with just under six minutes left. The Abbey rallied back as the Lady Knights were held to just one made field goal in the final 5:56. St. Andrews still clung to a 47-44 lead in the final seconds but a Jeanette Johansson three-pointer with four ticks left on the clock sent the game into the extra period.
In overtime, SAPC took the lead for good on a made free throw by senior Ashley Mitchell (Washington, D.C.). From that point, both teams traded a pair of baskets and the Knights held onto the same one-point lead, 52-51, with 2:55 left. This time, St. Andrews defense stepped up and held BAC scoreless in the final couple of minutes and the Knights pulled out to the seven-point victory.
Senior Karen Foggie (Charlotte, N.C.) scored nine points while a trio of other Lady Knights scored eight points apiece including Mitchell, senior Diana Martinez (Woodbridge, Va.) and senior Marquita Prichard (Havelock, N.C.). Mitchell also added seven boards and three assists. Foggie and Prichard had four and three steals, respectively.
Marie Marquez scored a team-high nine points for the Crusaders. Hannah Lunt chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds.
St. Andrews will entertain CVAC foe Lees-McRae College on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. during the Knights ‘Senior Day’.
