Pfeiffer rallies past St. Andrews women's basketball

LAURINBURG, N.C.Junior Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.) scored a game-high 22 points for St. Andrews Presbyterian College but visiting Pfeiffer University rallied late to take a 84-69 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women’s basketball victory in Harris Court Monday night.

The No. 5 East Region ranked Lady Falcons (19-4 Overall; 14-2 CVAC) made a 33-11 run in the final eight minutes to end the No. 6 ranked Lady Knights (16-7 Overall; 12-5 CVAC) 10-game win streak at home dating back to last season.

St. Andrews led for most of the first half as the Knights shot 52.4% (11-for-21) in the opening period. The Knights, who led by as many as 11 points in the first stanza, took a 38-32 lead into the intermission.

SAPC remained ahead for the first 12 minutes and a sophomore April Johnson (McColl, S.C.) jumper inside the paint gave the Knights a 58-51 advantage with eight minutes left. However, St. Andrews was held scoreless for almost three minutes and the visitors started their 33-11 run to end the game. The Knights only made four shots from the field in the final eight minutes as the Falcons pulled out the 15-point victory.

Turnovers played a big part in Pfeiffer’s comeback. SAPC committed 27 turnovers that led to 24 Falcon points. Pfeiffer, who applied full-court pressure throughout most of the game, had 13 steals (8 in the second period).

St. Andrews was held to 38.7% shooting in the second half while the Falcons made 51.7% of their attempts in the final 20 minutes. SAPC held a slim 39-34 rebounding advantage.

Norman went 8-for-11 from the floor to tally her game-high 22 points. Seniors Karen Foggie (Charlotte, N.C.) and Ashley Mitchell (Washington, D.C.) followed with 16 and 12 points, respectively. Norman and senior Marquita Prichard (Havelock, N.C.) each pulled down eight rebounds while Foggie had seven boards. Johnson chipped in with seven points, five boards, and three blocks.

Junior Raven Truslow (Charlottesville, N.C.) scored a team-high 20 points to lead five Falcons scorers in double-digits. Sophomore Ashley Crenshaw (Orange, N.J.) totaled 16; sophomore Kelly Mathis (Maryville, Tenn.) drilled 13 points; and senior Tamara Clay (Willow Springs, N.C.) and sophomore Lauren Brittingham (Washington, D.C.) each bucketed 12. Truslow just missed a triple-double after corralling a game-high 10 rebounds and making a game-high seven steals.

St. Andrews will try and bounce back on Thursday when they visit CVAC foe Belmont Abbey College at 5:30 p.m.
