DUE WEST, S.C.—With a 61-53 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference win over host Erskine College on Saturday afternoon, the No. 6 East Region ranked St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s basketball team have set a new record for wins in one season with five regular season games left.
The Lady Knights, who earned the eight-point victory at the Belk Arena behind 14 points from both senior Karen Foggie (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.), improved to 16-6 overall and 12-4 in the CVAC. The 16 wins surpass the programs previous best NCAA Division II record of 15 wins in the 2004/05 season (SAPC has competed in D-II basketball for 12 years).
The Flying Fleet (4-17 Overall; 3-13 CVAC) grabbed an early 5-0 lead but quickly watched the Knights erase their advantage with a 9-2 run. A senior Ashley Mitchell (Washington, D.C.) jumper to cap the rally to gave St. Andrews the lead for the rest of the day. Behind eight points from Mitchell in the first half, the Lady Knights kept rolling past Erskine and built a commanding 30-17 advantage at halftime.
St. Andrews maintained control in the second half leading for most of the final 20 minutes by double digits including at times in the final minute. Foggie bucketed 10 of her 14 points in the final stanza as SAPC recorded the eight-point victory.
Both teams shot well with Erskine connected on 46.7% from the field and was St. Andrews firing at 45.3% accuracy. The Fleet held a 27-22 advantage on the glass but committed more turnovers, 15-13.
Along with their 14 points, Foggie and Norman also pulled down a team-high four boards apiece. Mitchell finished with 10 points while senior Marquita Prichard (Havelock, N.C.) and junior April Johnson (McColl, S.C.) chipped in with eight and six points, respectively. Mitchell added three steals, three boards, and two assists.
Audrey Timmerman led the Flying Fleet with 17 points and Lacey Williams tallied 11.
St. Andrews will go for their fourth straight victory when they host CVAC rival Pfeiffer University on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
