Lady Knights post record-setting CVAC victory

LAURINBURG, N.C.The No. 6 East Region ranked St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s basketball team remained perfect at home at 9-0 after defeating Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference rival Mount Olive College 67-60 on Thursday evening in Harris Court.

The Lady Knights shot 48.1% from the floor en route to their 11th CVAC victory of the season. SAPC is now guaranteed to finish over .500 in the conference for the first time in the program’s NCAA Division II era. The Knights currently maintain a 15-6 overall record and an 11-4 ledger in the league. St. Andrews previous best conference record was 10-10 back in 2004/05.

The Lady Trojans, who held a slim one-point lead (55-54) with just over five minutes left, were out scored 13-5 after that point to fall to 11-11 overall and 7-8 in the CVAC. Mount Olive shot 37.1% from the field.

St. Andrews built a slim 35-29 halftime advantage behind a perfect half from senior Ashley Mitchell (Washington, D.C.), who scored 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting in the first 20 minutes. The Lady Knights went into the intermission making their shots at a 60% (15-for-25) accuracy.

SAPC held an eight-point lead three different times in the first 10 minutes of the second half but Mount Olive stayed within striking distance. Trailing 48-40 with just under 11 minutes left, the Lady Trojans rallied back with a 15-6 run over the next six minutes. Sophomore Alisa Jones (Fayetteville, N.C.) capped the comeback with a layup with 5:22 remaining to give MOC its only lead of the half, 55-54.

Senior Karen Foggie (Charlotte, N.C.) bucketed two free throws on the next possession to catapult St. Andrews back into the lead for good. Seniors Diana Martinez and April Henderson, both Woodbridge, Virginia natives, made back-to-back layups for the Knights and a Foggie jumper at 2:10 extended St. Andrews’ advantage to five, 62-57. Mount Olive only made one of their final six shots and SAPC drained five free throws in the final minute to pull out the seven-point victory.

Mitchell led the Knights offensively with 19 points while dishing out seven assists. Foggie tallied her second straight double-double with 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Martinez also logged 12 points. Junior Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.) chipped in with seven points and six boards before fouling out.

Freshman Helen Moore (Kenly, N.C.) scored a team-high 16 points for the Trojans. Jones and senior Tilah Worthy (Jacksonville, N.C.) each scored 12 points while sophomore Brittney Robich (Rockingham, N.C.) followed with 10. Jones notched a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Keshaun Mozee (Roseboro, N.C.) supplied seven assists.

St. Andrews will visit CVAC foe Erskine College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. while Mount Olive entertains conference rival Lees-McRae at the same time.
