WILSON, N.C.—Four players scored in double figures Thursday night as Barton took command of the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference basketball standings with a 57-48 conquest of visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College.
Barton entered the matchup of regionally-ranked teams with a one-game lead on St. Andrews. The Bulldogs trailed 21-18 at halftime of the defensive struggle, but rallied for their 10th straight win.
Barton, ranked No. 5 in the NCAA D-II East Region, rose to 16-3 overall and 12-1 in the CVAC while the Lady Knights, ranked No. 2 in the East, fell to 13-5 overall and 10-3 in league play. SAPC beat Barton 54-42 in late November.
Barton was nursing a 49-44 lead with a minute left when it ran down the clock. Freshman point guard Esty Flores (Virginia Beach, Va.) drilled a 3-pointer just before the shot clock went off for a nine-point lead, then Barton made 5-of-8 foul shots in the final minute.
Sophomore Kendra Thomas (Virginia Beach, Va.) tallied a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Lady Bulldogs, who are 9-0 in the “Dog House” this season. She also had a game-high five steals. Senior forward Jo Denevan (Edgewater, Md.) added 16 points, sophomore Aleesha Erb (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored 10 and Flores added 11. Barton beat SAPC 43-35 on the boards and both teams shot 34 percent from the floor.
St. Andrews committed 30 turnovers to Barton’s 26. The Knights lost starting guard (and second-leading scorer) Erika Thompson (Kalamazoo, Mich.) to a leg injury early in the game.
Junior Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y) scored 13, senior Karen Foggie (Charlotte, N.C.) 11 and senior Marquita Prichard (Havelock, N.C.) 10 for SAPC. Norman also supplied team-high’s of eight reboards and four steals but committed 10 turnovers. Senior Ashley Mitchell (Washington, N.C.), who also bucketed seven points, dished out a game-high five assists.
St. Andrews will try and get back on track on Saturday when they visit CVAC rival Limestone College (Gaffney, S.C.) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
