CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Three St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s basketball players scored in double-digits en route to a 62-48 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference victory over host Queens University of Charlotte on Thursday night in ‘The Oven’.
The Lady Knights, who are ranked No. 3 in the current NCAA Division II East Region, improved to 11-4 overall and 8-2 in the CVAC. The Lady Royals fell to 4-13 overall and 1-9 in the league.
Trailing by one halfway through the first half, St. Andrews went on a 9-0 run that included four points by sophomore April Johnson (McColl, S.C.) to build a 19-11 lead. The Knights maintained an eight-point advantage, 21-13, with 5:14 to go before the intermission but were held scoreless for the final five minutes. A 9-0 rally by Queens over that span gave the Royals a slim 22-21 lead at halftime.
SAPC was held to 27.6% (8-for-29) shooting in the opening frame while QUC shot 47.6% (10-for-21).
The Lady Royals continued to look for the upset out of the locker room and maintained a narrow 28-26 advantage with 17:12 left. However, the Lady Knights took control of the contest with a 17-2 run over the next seven minutes to take a commanding double-digit lead. Junior Erika Thompson (Kalamazoo, Mich.) capped the rally with the final five points.
St. Andrews stayed in control as Queens never got any closer than nine points in the final 10 minutes. The Knights coasted to the 14-point victory after shooting 50% (15-for-30) in the final stanza. SAPC finished the day going 23-for-59 (39.0%) from the field.
Senior Marquita Prichard (Havelock, N.C.) posted a game-high 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Junior Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.) and Thompson followed with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Thompson was 3-of-5 from behind the arc. Johnson grabbed a team-high six rebounds as the Knights out rebounded QUC 37-32. Norman and senior Karen Foggie (Charlotte, N.C.) each made three steals as SAPC swiped 15 total steals.
Ashley Watkins led the Royals offensively with 12 points while Jacquia Winstead posted 11 points. Ciera Brown had eight points to go along with her game-high 12 boards.
St. Andrews will entertain No. 23 nationally ranked CVAC rival Anderson University in a regional showdown on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The No. 3 regionally ranked Lady Knights will try and avenge an 87-79 loss at No. 2 regionally ranked Anderson back on January 6.
