UNCP women's basketball defeats St. Andrews

PEMBROKE, N.C.Senior guard Marquita Prichard (Havelock, N.C.) scored a season-high 16 points, but St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s basketball team fell to local non-conference UNC-Pembroke 67-47 on Monday night in the English E. Jones Center.

The Lady Braves, who were coming off a win against No. 10 nationally ranked Clayton State, continued their hot play to improve to 6-12 overall. The Lady Knights fell to 10-4 on the season.

St. Andrews grabbed a quick 2-0 lead to start the game on a junior Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.) jumper. UNC-Pembroke quick responded with the first of five 3-pointers in the opening frame to give the Lady Braves the lead for the rest of the evening. Victoria Willis’ trey with 5:57 left extended UNCP’s advantage to 12 (26-14). However, the Lady Knights out scored Pembroke 7-2 in the final five minutes and a Norman bucket capped the rally and pulled St. Andrews to within seven, 28-21, at halftime.

The Lady Braves controlled the tempo to start the second half and a 13-6 run over the first seven minutes extended the home lead back to double-digits at 41-27. Pembroke maintained the commanding advantage as St. Andrews struggled from the field in the second half only shooting 35.3% in the final 20 minutes. UNCP shot 50% in the final stanza and coasted to the 20-point victory.

Willis and Natasha Stotler each hit a trio of three-pointers and the Lady Braves canned nine total from behind the arc while the Lady Knights missed all 12 attempts from downtown. Pembroke also took advantage of twice as many free throws, converting on 14-of-26 attempts from the charity stripe. SAPC was 5-of-13 from the foul line. The Knights held a slim 37-36 rebounding edge but committed five more turnovers, 19-14.

Prichard scored her season-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting in just 23 minutes of action. Prichard also grabbed six boards.

Norman tied Prichard with 16 points going 8-for-11 from the floor. Norman posted the double-double with a game-high 13 rebounds. Senior Karen Foggie (Charlotte, N.C.) tallied seven points.

Stotler and Willis finished with 15 and 12 points, respectively, leading the Lady Braves offensively. Natalie Ray added 10 points for Pembroke. Sharkeysha Midgette grabbed a team-high seven boards.

St. Andrews will try and snap its season-worst two-game losing streak at CVAC foe Queens University of Charlotte on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
