Mitchell helps Lady Knights rally past Lees-McRae

BANNER ELK, N.C.Senior guard Ashley Mitchell (Washington, D.C.) scored a career-high 21 points to lead four Lady Knights in double-digits as St. Andrews Presbyterian College won their third straight Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference game, defeating host Lees-McRae College 78-69 on Saturday afternoon.

Mitchell bucketed 7-of-9 shots including a pair of 3-pointers as St. Andrews improved to 9-2 on the season and 6-1 in the CVAC. The Lady Bobcats fell to 3-8 overall and 1-5 in the league.

Lees-McRae led 32-20 after the first 14 minutes of the opening half by converting on 11 of their first 22 shots (50%). However, St. Andrews pesky defense caused four LMC turnovers and held the Lady Bobcats 0-for-6 in the final five minutes. The Lady Knights rattled off a 15-1 run over that span and took a slim 35-33 halftime advantage.

St. Andrews senior Karen Foggie (Charlotte, N.C.) led all scorers with 11 points at the intermission while classmate April Henderson (Woodbridge, Va.) had six of her eight career-high rebounds at the midway point to lead both squads. SAPC doubled up Lees-McRae on the boards, 32-16, after 20 minutes but had committed two more turnovers, 11-9.

The Knights continued their run out of the locker room opening up a seven-point (40-33) gain in the first two minutes but an 11-0 Bobcat rally catapulted Lees-McRae back into the lead, 44-40.

St. Andrews bounced back and out scored LMC 21-7 over the next 10 minutes to take control of the contest, 61-51. Senior Dianca Jones (Columbus, Miss.) kept the Bobcats within striking distance scoring 16 of her game-high 22 points in the second half including a jumper with three minutes left to close the gap to four, 64-60. However, the Knights finished the game with a 14-5 run to secure the nine-point victory.

St. Andrews dominated the glass with a final 60-32 rebounding advantage while also shooting 41.2% (28-for-68) from the field. Lees-McRae was held to 37.5% (24-for-64) marksmanship.

Mitchell added a game-high four steals and two assists to go along with her career-high 21 points. Foggie finished with 17 points, seven boards, and three assists. Junior Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.) tallied her second double-double of the year with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Erika Thompson (Kalamazoo, Mich.) was the fourth Lady Knight in double-digits logging 13 points. Junior April Johnson (McColl, S.C.) tied her career-high in rebounds for the third time pulling down 10 on the day.

Jones was 8-for-12 from the floor en route to her 22 points while junior Stephanie Mullinax (Etowah, Tenn.) totaled 16 points and eight boards. Junior Eariel Gholson (Hagerstown, Md.) scored nine of her 11 points on a trio of 3-pointers.

St. Andrews hosts CVAC local rival Coker College on Wednesday night. First-tip is slated for 5:30 p.m. as the Lady Knights will try to remain perfect at home.
