January 10, 2007

LAURINBURG, N.C.The St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s basketball team, which is off to their best start in the programs NCAA Division II era, is currently nationally ranked in multiple defensive statistical categories through January 7th games.

The Lady Knights have been playing a high-pressure defense throughout the first 1/3 of the season helping St. Andrews boast a 7-2 overall and 4-1 CVAC record.

“This is a testament to all of our ladies for all of the work they have been doing including weight lifting, conditioning, and practices,” said by third year head coach David Johnson. “This is now resulting in positive results on the court. It has been an overall total team effort that we look to continue into the second half of the season.”

SAPC is currently ranked No. 12 in all of NCAA Division II in defensive field-goal percentage. The Lady Knights are limiting teams to shooting a measly 33.7% from the field after eight games. Offensively, St. Andrews is shooting well over 40% on the season leading the Knights to already four double-digit victories.

St. Andrews is also currently ranked No. 23 in D-II in scoring defense. The Lady Knights are holding their opponents to just 54.4 points/game. SAPC also just snuck into the national top-50 in steals per game. The Knights average of 11.5 steals/game is good enough for a tie for No. 49 nationally.
