St. Andrews women's basketball coasts past Erskine

LAURINBURG, N.C.St. Andrews Presbyterian College shot a season-best 55.0-percent from the field en route to their fourth straight victory defeating Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference rival Erskine College 74-57 in women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon in Harris Court.

The Lady Knights, who improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the CVAC, scored a season-high 74 points by converting on 33-of-60 shot attempt. SAPC’s records are the best starts in the programs NCAA Division II era.

St. Andrews came out hot going 18-for-29 (62.1%) in the first half while holding the Flying Fleet to 26.3% (5-for-19) in the opening frame to build a commanding 40-13 halftime lead. Senior guard Marquita Prichard (Havelock, N.C.), in her first start of the season, scored all eight of her points in the first half to lead the Lady Knights into the intermission with the 27-point advantage.

Erskine, who fell to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the league, out scored St. Andrews 44-34 in the second half but the Fleet would not get any closer than 17 points in the final stanza. SAPC dominated the boards throughout the contest with a final 39-24 rebounding advantage while also only allowing Erskine a measly 3-of-15 (20.0%) on three-point attempts.

Junior forward Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.) led the Lady Knights with game-highs of 14 points and seven rebounds. Prichard dished out a game-high six assists to go along with four steals.

Junior guard Erika Thompson (Kalamazoo, Mich.) bucketed 13 points including three baskets from beyond the arc for St. Andrews. Sophomore forward Adrian White (Sumter, S.C.) had a season-high 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Senior guard Ashley Mitchell (Washington, D.C.) chipped in with eight points, four assists, three boards, and two swipes. Thompson and junior forward Jackie Cromer (Greensboro, N.C.) each pulled down five rebounds.

Senior Lisa Jackson (Taylors, S.C.) was the only Flying Fleet player to reach double-digits with 13 points. Jackson also made a game-high five steals. Senior Leigh Gray (Greenville, S.C.) and freshman Mary Ann Langford (LaGrange, Ga.) followed with nine and eight points, respectively. Gray and Jackson led the Fleet with five boards apiece.

St. Andrews next hits the hardwood in two weeks when they visit the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday, December 16 at 2:00 p.m. Erskine visits non-conference Lander University on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
