LAURINBURG, N.C.All 13 St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s basketball players saw significant time on Monday evening in Harris Court, with 11 Lady Knights scoring en route to a 65-44 conquest of non-conference Chowan University.

The Lady Knights continue their strong start on the season improving to 3-1 overall and 2-0 at home. The Hawks fell to 3-2 on the 2006/07 season.

“We have been stressing the importance of playing good defense and the team has been buying into it,” said third year St. Andrews head coach David Johnson. “Defense had been the focus on our team and we also picked up offensively tonight. A good defense and a strong offense will win a lot of ball games.”

The Knights scored a season-high 65 points on 22-of-52 (42.3-percent) shooting while also out rebounding Chowan 42-32 for the game.

“Our post players have done a great job controlling the paint area and every day in practice we have been challenging our guards to get in and rebound,” expressed Johnson.

St. Andrews once again held its foe to a cold night from the field as Chowan only converted on 3-of-18 (16.7%) shots in the first half. The Lady Knights also dominated the boards in the opening frame, out rebounding the Hawks 27-10 to take a commanding 34-13 advantage into the locker room.

Junior Erika Thompson (Kalamazoo, Mich.) scored eight of her game-high 13 points in the first half while senior Karen Foggie (Charlotte, N.C.) had six of her team-high eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes.

The two teams played the second half even at 31-31 apiece as several younger SAPC players gained some valuable experience as the Lady Knights coasted to the 21-point victory.

“We are trying to build depth on our squad as we are going to need it especially in the tough months of January and February,” explained Johnson.

Junior Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.) provided the Lady Knights with 10 points and four boards while classmate Jessy Perkins (Goldsboro, N.C.) had a season-high nine points. Senior Marquita Prichard (Havelock, N.C.) dished out four assists while seniors Ashley Mitchell (Washington, D.C.) and April Henderson (Woodbridge, Va.) each bucketed four points and supplied three helpers.

“My assistants have been doing an outstanding job in practice,” continued Johnson talking about assistant coaches Brooke Johnson and John Siers. “They have been very well prepared at practices, keeping the ladies going hard, and making sure the players are doing the right things.”

Freshman Tyshaunna Winston (Richmond, Va.) led the Hawks with 11 points and four assists. Junior Keyon Sellers (Effingham, S.C.) tallied 10 points and five rebounds. Freshman Holly Baldwin (Richmond, Va.) had seven points to go along with her game-high 12 rebounds.

St. Andrews visits Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference rival Mount Olive College on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Chowan travels to North Carolina Wesleyan College on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
