SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.Junior guard Erika Thompson (Kalamazoo, Mich.) led all scorers with 17 points but Bowie State University overcame the treat with a 52-45 victory over the St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s basketball team in the championship game of the 2006 Wolf’s Bus Lines Tournament (hosted by Shippensburg University) at neutral Heiges Field House Saturday.

The Lady Bulldogs (2-0) out scored the Lady Knights (1-1) by 10 in the second half as SAPC went cold from the floor. The Knights only converted on 4-of-27 (14.8%) field goal attempts in the final 20 minutes.

Senior Marquita Pritchard (Havelock, N.C.) scored St. Andrews’ final six points of the opening stanza to give the Lady Knights a slim 23-20 advantage at halftime.

However, the Bulldogs built a 36-27 lead with a 16-4 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half. Bowie State held St. Andrews scoreless from the field over that 10 minute span until Pritchard finally broke through with a made jumper midway through the period.

The Lady Knights kept fighting and a junior Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.) three-point play with three minutes left capped an 8-0 run to pull SAPC within one. It was as close as the Knights would get as St. Andrews committed three turnovers and missed their final four shots in the last three minutes giving Bowie State the seven-point victory.

Thompson led the Lady Knights with 17 points, six rebounds, four steals, and two assists. Pritchard and Norman added eight points apiece. Junior April Johnson (McColl, S.C.) and Norman each pulled down a team-high seven boards. Senior Karen Foggie (Charlotte, N.C.) added six points, four rebounds, and four steals.

St. Andrews opens Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference play on Tuesday in their home-opener against Barton College. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
