Lady Knights post 54-48 win in season opener

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.Senior guards Ashley Mitchell (Washington, D.C.) and Karen Foggie (Charlotte, N.C.) each scored 11 points as the St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s basketball team opened the 2006/07 season with a 54-48 victory over host Shippensburg University in the opening round of the Wolf’s Bus Lines Tournament at Heiges Field House Friday.

The Lady Knights (1-0) will battle Bowie State in the championship game of the Wolf’s Bus Lines Tournament on Saturday.

A made basketball by junior forward April Johnson (McColl, S.C.) in the opening minute of the game gave St. Andrews an early lead that the Knights would never relinquish in the first half.

SAPC took their largest lead of the first half, 24-17, with 90 seconds left before intermission but Shippensburg (0-1) scored the final three points of the period to climb within four, 24-20, headed into the locker room. Junior forward Danielle Norman (Bronx, N.Y.) scored eight of her nine points in the first 20 minutes to lead the Knights.

The Raiders started the second half with a 19-11 run in the first eight minutes to take their only lead of the day at 39-35. The Lady Knights countered with a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to take their largest lead at 45-39. Junior Erika Thompson (Kalamazoo, Mich.) cashed in on two 3-pointers, Foggie had a pair of baskets, and Johnson capped the run with a made shot.

Shippensburg would not fold and they pulled to within two points three different times including 50-48 with nine seconds left. However, Thompson and Foggie each converted on a pair of free throws to lift the visitors to the six-point victory.

Foggie added four steals and four rebounds while Mitchell had four boards and two assists to go along with their team-high 11 points. Norman just missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Thompson also finished with nine points. Johnson logged six points, four rebounds, and three steals. Senior Diana Martinez (Woodbridge, Va.) pulled down six boards, scored four points, and made three steals.
