The Knights, who improved to 15-11 overall and 10-9 in the CVAC, are guaranteed to finish with a record over .500 on the season. It is the first time in St. Andrews’ 10 year history as a NCAA Division II program to finish a season with a winning record.

“We really played well defensively today pressuring the ball and blocking the passing lanes,” said SAPC Head Coach David Johnson. “Our defense was very strong in the first five minutes of the game and it set the tone for the rest of the game. Our offense was smoother today because of our defense. The offense takes care of itself when you play good defense”.

Coltrain finished the game with 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting including 3-of-4 on three-point goals. Coltrain also had two rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. SAPC Women’s Basketball Picked 7th in CVAC Poll

October 7, 2004

THOMASVILLE, NC—The St. Andrews women’s basketball team is picked 7th in the 2004-2005 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Pre-Season Poll as voted on by the conference coaches.

Anderson led the voting followed by Barton and Belmont Abbey. The Knights look to continue to build on last years record setting season. SAPC finished last season seventh in the CVAC with a 12-17 overall and 8-12 conference record. It marked the most overall and league wins in the programs NCAA Division II history and was capped off by their first ever postseason victory.

David Johnson takes over as head coach of the team after serving as an assistant last year. Leah Frierson and Robbie Turner will assist Johnson. This season hopes to be one of continued success for the Knights. With the core of the team back, including 11 upperclassmen, and the addition of six new players St. Andrews has the potential to surprise a lot of teams.

The seniors should prove to be the leaders on this young, but talented group of underclassmen. Johnson hopes to be able to push the basketball more this season with the athletes he has, while still controlling the tempo of the game in the half court.

“Our main goals are to win the conference, win the conference tournament and make the national tournament. The key for this to happen is for us to be consistent with our play from start to finish, making sure all of our players understand the dedication and focus it will take to achieve these goals,” said Johnson.

The Anderson College women top the preseason poll as voted on by CVAC head basketball coaches. Last season the Trojans captured the CVAC Tournament Championship and went on to the semifinals of the NCAA East Regional Championships. Anderson returns a core of talent that includes last years CVAC Tournament MVP and Freshman of the Year LaShonda Chiles, as they will look to build on their 25-7 (16-4 CVAC) record. Being last year’s #1 scoring team in the nation for DII schools, they were 20-0 when they scored 80 or more points.

Barton College is directly behind Anderson for the top spot in the preseason poll. The Bulldogs matched the Trojans with their own semifinal appearance in the NCAA East Regional Championships. They reached their pinnacle last year by dominating the CVAC regular season to become the CVAC Regular Season Champions with a 24-6 (18-2 CVAC) record. Reigning CVAC Coach of the Year Wendee Saintsing will be counting on 2003-04 Player of the Year Keauna Vinson for continued leadership this year.

Finishing third in the poll are the Crusaders from Belmont Abbey College. The Abbey will be looking to build on last year’s 19-10 (15-5) record, where they finished third in the CVAC regular season and advanced to the semifinals of the CVAC Tournament Championships. The Crusaders strength will be that they are returning six players from last year with four of their five starters coming back.

Rounding out the lady's poll 4-11 was: Coker, Mt. Olive, Lees-McRae, St. Andrews, Erskine, Pfeiffer, Queens, and Limestone respectively.

Johnson Promoted to SAPC Head Women’s Basketball Coach

June 25, 2004

LAURINBURG, NC—St. Andrews Presbyterian College Athletic Director Carl Ullrich announced David Johnson as the new head coach of the women’s basketball program.

Johnson has spent the past two years as an assistant basketball coach for St. Andrews. After spending his first year with the men’s team, Johnson switched over and assisted with the vastly improved women’s program last year.

David spent three years as a member of the Marlboro County High School coaching staff, serving as head coach of the girls’ varsity basketball team and assistant coach of the boys’ varsity basketball and football programs. In 2001, Marlboro County claimed the South Carolina State 4-A Boys’ Basketball Championship after finishing as the Lower-State Runner-up in 2000. Johnson was also a Hawaii Basketball Classic Tournament Coach in 2001.

Johnson will be replacing William Carter as head coach of the women’s team. Carter will remain the head coach of both tennis teams at St. Andrews and has taken on the duties of Associate Athletic Director of Organization.

Johnson expressed his excitement after taking over the program knowing that the team has great potential. Last year David helped assist the team to its best NCAA Division II regular-season finish with 12 victories. Johnson believes the addition of a good recruiting class along with a solid core of returnees can lead to several good seasons in the near future. Johnson will work with a base of seven returning seniors who have a lot of game time experience that could help lead the Knights in a demanding CVAC conference.

Johnson summed up his feelings saying; “I’ve wanted to get into the coaching fraternity and am looking forward to taking over the role as head coach. After working as an assistant at the college level for two years, I have learned a lot about how the college game works, especially after being a high school coach. I believe that knowledge will help me tremendously.”

A native of Marlboro County, Johnson is a 1998 graduate of Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education.

In addition to his coaching duties with the Knights, Johnson will also be teaching at St. Andrews. He has three children (Cecilia, Daniel and D’Averia) and will celebrate his one-year anniversary with his wife, Johnnerlyn, in July.
