Volleyball Sees Tough Teams at Lander Tournament

Greenwood, SC- The St. Andrews ladies of the court made their way to a two-day tournament in South Carolina this weekend. Lander University hosted a very competitive weekend of women’s volleyball. During their time at Lander, the SAU women’s volleyball team played for matches against southeast regional competitors; College of Coastal Georgia, Lander University, Armstrong Atlantic State University, and Francis Marion University.

College of Coastal Georgia 3, St. Andrews 0

On Friday, October 21, St. Andrews went up against the College of Coastal Georgia and dropped the first three sets 26-28, 15-25, and 20-25. Celia Duggan (Lugoff, SC) once again led the Knights with eight kills, with Ashleigh Fritter (Midway Park, NC) threw down six kills against the Mariners. Megan Nelson (Edmonds, WA) led SAU to 21 kills by putting up well placed sets. Allie Garland (Moreno Valley, CA) dig 10 balls for the Knights while almost every other Knight who played also contributed at least one dig to help SAU stay in the game.

Lander University 3, St. Andrews 0

Taking on the Bearcats of Lander, the Knights Netters again found themselves opposite of a strong team, but did not let that intimidate them. With scores of 15-25, 20-25, and 18-25, the Knights played hard and made the Bearcats earn their 3-0 victory. Stephanie Lombardo (Winterville, NC) took over as the leading attacker for the ‘Drew with nine kills while the rest of the Knights went up for a swing or two as well. Nelson earned 20 assists for St. Andrews by being the go-to setter as the ladies pushed back at the powerful Bearcats. Ilaisha Hale (Moreno, CA) earned the only solo block of the game, with teammates Duggan and Nelson working together to set up an assisted block. Garland again kept the ball in play numerous times for the Knights as she dug 16 attacked balls. Lombardo did her part to give the Knights more opportunities as well, by digging 12 hard hit balls.

Armstrong Atlantic State University 3, St. Andrews 0

The Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic cruised by the Knights in three sets (5-25, 14-25, 13-25) this afternoon. SAU only managed to put down 12 kills against the Pirates; six of which were assisted by Nelson. Garland got her hands on 10 balls that were attacked by the hard-hitting Pirates. Fritter and Hale put up a wall to knock down one double block against Armstrong Atlantic, who pounded 43 kills and six service aces at the Knights.

Francis Marion University 3, St. Andrews 1

Keeping up her powerful net play, Lombardo earned a .381 hitting percentage against the Patriots as she blasted 10 kills straight to the floor. Coming in second for the Knights, Duggan and Hale each used their accurate placement to kill seven balls. Nelson was moving all around the court as she assisted 16 of the Knights’ kills, followed by Fritter who set up six kills for the ‘Drew. Putting their serving drills to work, the Knights tossed out eight service aces against the Patriots; Lomardo-4, Ruka Akolade (Aurora, CO)- 2, Nelson- 1, Garland- 1. Garland kept 25 balls from hitting the floor while Amanda VanKleeck (Deltona, FL) dug 10 of the Patriots’ attacks. Duggan and Hale also showed their defensive net skills as they each knocked down two solo blocks.

The Knights travel to Claflin University on Wednesday, October 26 for another matchup against the Panthers. Play is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM.
