Knights go to Five with Winston-Salem State

Winston-Salem, NC- St. Andrews gave the Rams of Winston-Salem State a run for the money today as the Knights forced WSSU to five sets in an exciting evening of women’s volleyball. Taking sets three and four, SAU tried to knock down a win, but was unable to come out on top as the Rams won the fifth set and claimed the game 3-2 (16-25, 17-25, 25-11, 25-20, 10-15) over the Knights.

Ilaisha Hale (Moreno, CA) led the Knights (2-20 Overall) to a team total of 11 blocks against the Rams. Hale personally got her hands in the way of the WSSU (12-9) hitters as she earned five solo blocks and was a part of three double blocks. Celia Duggan (Lugoff, SC) also got her hands on some of the attacks coming at the Knights and get two solo blocks and one assisted block. Setting up the other double blocks for SAU were Allie Garland (Moreno Valley, CA; 2), Megan Nelson (Edmonds, WA; 1), and Stephanie Lombardo (Winterville, NC; 1).

Lombardo also used her net play to kill a team high of 11 balls in tonight’s game. Hale and Garland came in second for SAU with eight kills each, followed by Duggan with five. Again setting up the Knights’ offense, Nelson assisted 21 of the ladies’ kills while freshman Ashleigh Fritter set 16 assists for the ‘Drew. Away from the net, aggressive serving earned the Knights Netters five service aces; Nelson-2, Lombardo-2, Fritter-1.

Garland used her irreplaceable passing to dig 15 balls for the squad, while sophomore Ruka Akolade (Aurora, CO) showed her skill and dedication by digging 13 of the fast-paced attacks that came from the Rams. Lombardo and Nelson hustled all over the court as well, earning nine digs each in the five set game.

After adding this game to the schedule, the Knights will return to their regular schedule and host Coker College on Wednesday, October 19. Claim your seat at Harris Court before 7:00 PM in order to catch all of the Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action
