Knights Fight Mount Olive through Four SetsOctober 8, 2011 Laurinburg, NC- St. Andrews showed the fans at Harris Court what competitive volleyball looks like when they hosted Mount Olive College for this afternoon’s Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball match. The Knights started slowly, dropping the first set 12-25. However, SAU came out strong for set number two and topped the Trojans 25-17. Two more close sets finished today’s competition with Mount Olive taking the overall win 1-3 (12-25, 25-17, 28-30, 21-25). The Knights played hard for a win this afternoon, but were unable to come out on top despite their tremendous play. Showing off their skills at the net, three Knights (2-16 Overall, 0-10 Conference) earned 10 or more kills against the Trojans (8-10, 4-6), en route to a .146 overall hitting percentage for the Knights in today’s match up. Ilaisha Hale (Moreno, CA) and Stephanie Lombardo (Winterville, NC) each blasted 13 kills for SAU; while Celia Duggan (Lugoff, SC) sent 10 balls straight to the floor, giving her a season total of 121 kills. Giving the Knights opportunities to score, setters Megan Nelson (Edmonds, WA) and Ashleigh Fritter (Midway Park, NC) put up 33 combined assists for St. Andrews, 21 and 12 respectively. SAU used smart serves to knock down six serving aces, with Nelson and Lombardo each serving up two aces while Fritter and Ruka Akolade (Aurora, CO) each earned one ace. Following the ball over the net, the Knights set up strong blocks to help slow down the Trojan offense. The Knights Netters used the Trojans’ attack to score nine points, by blocking the ball to the floor on the Trojans’ side of the court. Hale, Duggan, Nelson, Lombardo, and Fritter joined forces to put up seven double blocks for the Knights. Getting in front of a few more attackers, Duggan also executed two solo blocks for the ‘Drew. The Knights could not stop every ball though, forcing the SAU defense to do its share of work in the back row. Allie Garland (Moreno Valley, CA) stepped up to the challenge and dug an impressive 27 balls that were attacked by the Trojans, giving her a season and career total of 268 digs. Adding even more support to the SAU defense, Fritter kept 19 attacked balls in play for the Knights with Lombardo adding 11 more digs to the squad’s total of 86 digs. St. Andrews volleyball will be on the road for two games as they travel to North Greenville University (Tigerville, SC) on Friday, October 14 to play at 7:00 PM and then make their way to Bristol, Tennessee, to go up against the King College Tornado on Saturday, October 15 at 12:00 PM.
