Laurinburg, NC- St. Andrews faced the hard hitting Bulldogs of Barton College in tonight’s women’s volleyball game at Harris Court. Even though the Knights were able to dig 66 of the 97 swings taken by Barton, SAU was unable to pull out a win and dropped the game to the Bulldogs 0-3.

The Knights (2-15 Overall, 0-9 Conference) started each set with intensity and determination, but the Bulldogs (7-10, 3-6) managed to find the floor more often than the Knights and pulled away from SAU in each set finish the game with set scores of 16-25, 17-25, and 15-25. Keeping the Knights in the game, Allie Garland (Moreno Valley, CA) dug 26 balls that were launched by the Bulldogs.

The Knights were getting their hands up at the net as they earned three blocks against the strong Barton offense. Moreno, California, native Ilaisha Hale used her legs to propel herself above the net and assist Ashleigh Fritter (Midway Park, NC) in a double block as well as jumping by herself for a solo block. Megan Nelson (Edmonds, WA) got her hands on a ball that was attacked by Barton’s leading hitter, Kati Wood, and sent the ball straight down onto the Bulldog’s side of the court for an impressive solo block.

In addition to her solo block, Nelson put up 11 assists for the Knights, helping set the ladies up for over half of their 20 kills. Leading the Knights at the net was junior Stephanie Lombardo (Winterville, NC). Lombardo used smart attacks to give the Knights 10 kills, with Celia Duggan (Lugoff, SC) contributing seven points at the net. Lombardo and Nelson also boosted the Knights’ score from the back line as they blasted three service aces (Lombardo-2, Nelson-1).

The Knights will appear at Harris Court again Saturday, October 8 to take on the Trojans of Mount Olive. Be sure you are in your seat before 2:00 PM so you can see the first serve of the game and cheer on your Knights.
