Falcons Swoop by Knights VolleyballOctober 4, 2011 Laurinburg, NC- Harris Court saw another thrilling evening of Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball as the Knights of St. Andrews University played the longest set of their season so far against the Pfeiffer University (Misenheimer, NC) Falcons in tonight’s Dig for the Cure game. A steady paced first set led to a powerful rally from the Knights in the second set, with a score of 29-31 in favor of the Falcons in set number two. SAU was unable to keep up with Pfeiffer in the third set and dropped the match 0-3 (14-25, 29-31, 16-25) to the Falcons. The first set started out as an even match, with the score staying close for the first 20 points. After the Falcons (4-3 Conference, 7-7 Overall) began to pull away, the Knights (0-7, 2-13) could not seem to get back into their groove and lost the set 14-25. Things picked up for the Knights in the second set as they took the lead early and maintained that lead for the majority of the game. However, the Falcons came together and rallied their way to a challenging victory over St. Andrews after a 60 point set (29-31). The St. Andrews ladies tried to put the ball away, but unfortunately could not find the floor every time. In fact, the Knights made 116 attack attempts, 25 more than the Falcons. Leading the Knights yet again, Celia Duggan (Lugoff, SC) blasted nine kills and only made two hitting errors, a large feat considering the Falcons put up a double-block on most of the Knights’ attacks. Adding to SAU’s total of 25 kills, Ilaisha Hale (Moreno, CA) pounded five kills, while Megan Nelson (Edmonds, WA) and Ashleigh Fritter (Midway Park, NC) tied with four kills each. Junior Lyndsey Moss (Marston, NC) posted two kills for SAU, with Ruka Akolade (Aurora, CO) adding one kill to help the Knights reach their total. Nelson set her way to 13 more assists this evening, giving her a total of 143 for the season. In yet another dual role appearance, Fritter also added a few assists to the books as she set up six kills for the Knights. Middle-blocker Hale found herself under the ball after a hard dig from the Knights. Reacting to the play, Hale bump set the ball to teammate Nelson giving the Knights a kill and earning Hale her first assist of her collegiate career. From a defensive perspective, the Knights worked hard to compete with the Falcons. At the net, the ladies set up three assisted blocks that reverted attacks from the Falcons into a point for the Knights. Knights libero Allie Garland (Moreno Valley, CA) followed the ball and dug over 1/3 of the attacks made by Pfeiffer for a game total of 32 digs. Stephanie Lombardo (Winterville, NC) also did her part to help the Knights stay in the game as she kept 12 balls alive that came from of the Falcons’ offense. The Knights will host a weekend of volleyball action as they hit the court on Friday, October 7 at 7:00 PM and Saturday, October 8 at 2:00 PM in Laurinburg. Be sure to come out and support your Knights as several of the Knights Netters will reach statistical milestones in their playing careers this weekend.
