Knights Make Saints Nervous at SA Home OpenerSeptember 30, 2011 Laurinburg, NC- It was nothing short of a fan frenzy at Harris Court as the Knights Netters and the SAU fans kept the energy high during tonight’s home volleyball opener. The Saints of Limestone College (Gaffney, SC) realized they were in for a tight match when play commenced on center court at St. Andrews. After three competitive games, the Saints outlasted the Knights and took a 0-3 (19-25, 15-25, 20-25) victory over SAU. The St. Andrews (2-13 Overall, 0-7Conference) ladies impressed a large crowd as they bumped, set, and spiked their way to three highly entertaining sets of Conference Carolinas volleyball. The Knights hustled all over the court to ensure that they kept as many balls in play as possible. In fact, the team dug an impressive 55 balls that were attacked by the Saints (8-8 Overall, 5-2 Conference). Moreno Valley, CA, native Allie Garland contributed 20 of those digs to SAU’s total, while Stephanie Lombardo (Winterville, NC), Lyndsey Moss (Marston, NC), and Ruka Akolade (Aurora, CO) contributed 24 digs combined (9, 8, and 7 respectively). Leading the charge for the Knights at the net was freshman Celia Duggan (Lugoff, SC) with eight kills that drove the fans wild. Following Duggan as crowd pleasers were Lombardo (4), Ilaisha Hale (Moreno, CA; 3), and Moss (2). Rounding out the Knights’ attack, Megan Nelson (Edmonds, WA) and Ashleigh Fritter (Midway Park, NC) each knocked down one kill for SAU. Strong defensive net play also helped the Knights score as they set up four successful double blocks against the Saints. When they were not swinging at the ball, Nelson and Fritter did their part to set up their teammates and run a quick offense for St. Andrews. These two ladies tracked down as many balls as they could in order to put the Knights in a position to score. Their efforts resulted in 16 points for SAU, with each of them earning eight assists. Garland got in on the action as well by setting two balls that resulted in points for the Knights Netters. With only two serving errors, the Knights put pressure on the Saints from behind the line. The Knights’ accurately placed serves earned them a total of six aces. Garland and Lombardo each pulled down two service aces, while Nelson and Fritter each put one serve down right between the Saints’ back row players. Laurinburg will see the Knights volleyball squad adorned in special uniforms on Tuesday, October 4 at 7:00 PM as SAU holds its annual Dig for the Cure game to benefit breast cancer research. The Knights will host Conference Carolinas foe Pfeiffer University for this year’s Dig Pink game. Be sure to come out and support your Knights as they face the Cobras for the second time this season and try to raise as much money as they can to support the efforts of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation. -GO KNIGHTS- |
