Knights Volleyball Comes up Short After Five SetsSeptember 17, 2011 Spartanburg, SC- It was an exciting day for volleyball as the Converse College Valkyries (2-5 Overall, 1-2 Conference) hosted the Knights of St. Andrews (2-9, 0-4). High energy filled the gym as each set could have gone to either team. Despite their hard work, the Knights could not seem to keep their rhythm in the final set and finished the game with a 2-3 (25-22, 20-25, 21-25, 25-22, 8-15) loss to Converse. The Knights racked up an impressive 49 kills and 200 total attempts, a season high in each category for the squad. Sophomore Megan Nelson (Edmonds, WA) led the team in kills by sending 10 balls to the floor. Lyndsey Moss (Marston, NC) and Celia Duggan (Lugoff, SC) trailed Nelson with nine kills each. Right on their heels, sophomore Sam Neveu (Greenville, SC) found an open spot on the court eight times. Keeping the Knights net play going, freshman Ashleigh Fritter (Midway Park, NC) and sophomore Ruka Akolade (Aurora, CO) each smashed five kills. Allie Garland (Moreno Valley, CA) also added to a powerful attack from SA by swinging for a kill three times. Fritter set up the Knights offense by assisting 23 of the 49 kills that were pounded by St. Andrews. Nelson not only swung for the Knights, but gave others the chance to score as she set 19 balls that resulted in points for SA. Allowing the Knights to continue play, the defense kept the ball alive by getting their hands under 83 attacks from the Valkyries. Leading the team, Garland earned herself 22 digs, with Nelson coming up second by keeping 16 balls alive for the Knights. When they were not attacking, the Knights were getting their hands up at the net in an attempt to stop the Valkyries’ offense. Duggan put up high hands for three solo blocks against Converse, while Fritter and Neveu paired up to stop two attacks, earning two block assists each. Anna Williams, a Converse College sophomore, proved to be too much for the Knights to handle though as she hit 16 balls to the floor in the Knights’ court. The Knights will continue conference play on Wednesday, September 21 when they hit the road on their way to Wilson, NC. The Barton College Bulldogs will be hosting the Knights for a 7:00 PM game.
