Box Score

Due West, SC- Knights volleyball could not keep up with Erskine College, as the Flying Fleet coasted by St. Andrews in three sets (15-25, 15-25, 12-25); resulting in a Conference Carolinas loss for the Knights.

St. Andrews (2-8 Overall, 0-3 Conference) fell short at the net as the Fleet (6-5, 1-0) pounded 30 more kills than the Knights. Jamie Murray and Sandra Campbell, both of Erskine College, put pressure on the Knights as they earned 13 and 11 kills respectively; but the SA defense tried to keep the Knights alive by earning 42 digs as a team. Megan Nelson (Edmonds, WA) saved 10 balls from hitting the floor, while Ruka Akolade (Aurora, CO) dug nine attacks and Allie Garland (Moreno Valley, CA) set up in the right spots on the court to earn eight digs.

The Knights’ offense was a team effort as six members of the squad earned at least one kill. Celia Duggan (Lugoff, SC) smashed four balls onto the Fleets side of the court, while teammates Nelson and Akolade each earned two kills and Ashleigh Fritter (Midway Park, NC), Benee Norton (Rex, GA), and Sam Neveu (Greenville, SC) all scored one kill for the Knights.

Several Knights maintained a presence at the net from a defensive perspective as well, helping the Knights slow down the Fleet’s offense. Duggan kept her eyes on the ball and executed precise timing as she got her hands in front of numerous Erskine swings, earning three solo blocks. Lyndsey Moss (Marston, NC) and Nelson also used their strong hands to earn one solo block each against the Fleet.

Nelson and Fritter played a vital role in the Knights’ attack as they placed 11 balls in opportune spots for the ladies to be able to knock down points for SA. The two ladies split the total assists with Nelson setting six and Fritter putting up five.

SA improved their serving immensely as they only made two service errors total after three sets. With two service aces, one from Nelson and the other from Akolade, the Knights made the Flying Fleet play for nearly every point that they earned.

St. Andrews volleyball made their trip to South Carolina a weekend event. They will stop in Spartanburg on Saturday, September 17 to go against the Valkaries of Converse College on their way back to Laurinburg, NC.
