Trojans Fight Off Knights in Three Straight Sets

Mount Olive, NC- St. Andrews volleyball faced the hard hitting Trojans of Mount Olive College (Mount Olive, NC) for tonight’s Conference Carolinas match up. The Knights saw a lot of power swings coming from the opposite side of the net; leading to a 0-3 (15-25, 11-25, 12-25) loss for SA volleyball.

The Knights tried to keep up, but could not seem to get their hands under the ball enough to come out on top. Erika Conner of Mount Olive wasted no time and earned the Trojans three points strictly off of serves when she sent over three aces within the first seven points of the match. Mount Olive’s Lauren Lee also used a powerful serve to add four more aces to Trojans total of 14 team aces in the three game set; the highest single-match ace total the program has seen in three years.

Celia Duggan (Lugoff, SC) led in net play for the Knights by blasting five balls straight down onto the Trojans’ half of the court. Following close behind Duggan, Megan Nelson (Edmonds, WA) put down three kills on behalf of the Knights, while Sam Neveu (Greenville, SC) and Allie Garland (Moreno Valley, CA) each added two kills. Ashleigh Fritter (Midway Park, NC) and Nelson tossed up 10 assists, six and four respectively, attempting to help the squad beat the Trojans’ strong defense. Their efforts proved to be insufficient as MOC used seven of SA’s swings to score for the Trojans; earning 12 block assists and one solo block.

Garland tried to dig the fast flying attacks that were coming at the Knights by picking up eight digs, with Amanda VanKleeck (Deltona, FL) getting her hands on five attacked balls. The SA defense could not manage to pick up enough digs to overcome the Trojans; especially when Trojans Ericka Conner and Carly White found their way to the net, each pounding 10 kills against the Knights.

or their next appearance, the St. Andrews volleyball squad will travel to South Carolina on Friday, September 16 to take on the Flying Fleet at Erskine College in Due West.
