Box Score

Hartsville, SC- The SA netters let the Cobras of Coker College (Hartsville, SC) glide by in three sets during the Knights’ first Conference Carolinas volleyball match, with a final score of 3-0 (16-25, 19-25, 12-25). The Knights gave it their all, but the strong offense and powerful serves coming from the Coker line-up kept SA under 20 points in each of the three sets.

Ruka Akolade (Aurora, CO) and Allie Garland (Moreno Valley, CA) rallied for the Knights with six kills each and 42 total swings (Akolade-19 & Garland-23); followed closely by Celia Duggan (Lugoff, SC), who pounded 4 kills. Coker sophomore Katie McElveen picked up 9 digs, helping her team beat the Knights’ offense.

Making the Cobras a little uneasy, the Knights stepped up their play in game two and maintained a close rally for a majority of the game. The smart shots and good ball placement by SA forced the home team to change their playing strategy in order to defend their court. The Cobras discovered a way to slow down the Knights’ net play and rallied past St. Andrews for a 19-25 game two victory for Coker.

The SA defense fought hard with Akolade and Megan Nelson (Edmonds, WA) digging six attacks each from the Cobras. Hannah Vadakin and Taylor Willis, two Coker College sophomores, swung at the Knights 38 times (Vadakin- 21 & Willis- 17), tallying eight kills each. Ashleigh Fritter tried to move the Knights forward by putting up seven assists, but the Cobras high hands proved to be too much for the ladies to get around. Sophomore setter Kelly Stine’s quick hands set up the Coker offense, as she boasted 17 assists for the Cobras.

Upon their return from South Carolina, the Knights will be on the road again for another weekend tournament. This time, the ladies of the court head down to Jacksonville, FL, for a tri-match tournament at Edward Waters College. While in Florida, the swinging six will take on Claflin University (Orangeburg, SC), Edward Waters College, and Livingstone College (Salisbury, NC) during the two-day tournament that is scheduled to start Friday, September 9.
