UNCP volleyball defeats St. Andrews in four

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Senior Lindsey Stansbury (Morgan City, La.) posted a double-double for host St. Andrews Presbyterian College, but senior Rebekah Niesborella’s (Huntersville, N.C.) own double-double powered visiting UNC-Pembroke to a 30-28, 27-30, 30-27, 30-18 non-conference volleyball victory on Wednesday evening in Harris Court.

Niesborella made 21 digs and ripped 13 kills as the Braves improved to 19-13 on the season. Stansbury totaled 13 digs and 12 kills for a 10-20 Knights squad.

SAPC held a 26-22 lead in the first game but UNCP stormed back with an 8-2 run to rally to the two-point win. The Knights tied the match by squeaking out a three-point win in the second but the Braves regained the lead again by reversing the score in the third. Pembroke ended the match by grabbing an early lead in the fourth and coasting to the 12-point victory.

Freshman Rachel Young (Leesburg, Va.) ripped a match-high 15 kills for the visitors while junior Heidi Platow (Wilmington, N.C.) added 11 spikes. The Braves specialists played well as sophomore libero Andrea Laza (Cary, N.C.) made a match-high 35 digs and junior setter Heather Fierce ( Muncie, Ind.) supplied a match-high 50 assists and two aces. Freshman Kayla Marbert (Centreville, Va.) chipped in with 12 digs.

Knights’ senior Tara Lemieux (Panama City, Fla.) just missed a double-double with a team-high 13 kills and nine digs. Sophomore setter Jaime Hayes (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) logged 40 assists and 15 digs while senior libero Erin Haugen (Ft. Mill, S.C.) scooped up 21 digs. Freshman Kelly Williams (Laurel, Md.) served up a match-high four aces. Sophomore Galina Podolsky (Raleigh, N.C.) registered match-highs of four solo blocks and four block assists.

St. Andrews visits Conference Carolinas foe Limestone College on Friday at 7:00 p.m. while UNC-Pembroke travels to Peach Belt rival USC-Aiken at the same time.
