LAURINBURG, N.C.—Lees-McRae College dropped the first game to host St. Andrews Presbyterian College fought back to win the next three games to win Saturday’s Conference Carolinas volleyball match 27-30, 30-27, 38-36, 30-18 during St. Andrews Knights Fest and “Dig For a Cure”.
Senior Caty Honey (Geneva, Ill.) and freshman Whitney Kiser (Connelly Springs, N.C.) each supplied 10 kills and three blocks to lead the No. 10 Atlantic Region ranked Lady Bobcats to the come-from-behind victory. LMC improved to 16-11 overall and 10-3 in conference play.
The Lady Knights -- who received 16 digs, six service aces, and three blocks from senior Lindsey Stansbury (Morgan City, La.) -- fell to 9-17 and 8-6.
After each team split a pair of three-point games, the two squads played a dramatic third game that consisted of nine game points. St. Andrews held off the visitors on game-point five times while failing on three of their own attempts before the Bobcats finally prevailed 38-36. Lees-McRae used the momentum from winning the nail-biter by taking the final game by 12 points to win the match.
Freshman Kelly Williams (Laurel, Md.) had a team-high 17 kills and three aces for the Knights while classmate Leah Davison (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) had 12 spikes and four blocks. Senior Tara Lemieux (Panama City, Fla.) posted her 10th double-double of the season with 13 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Jaime Hayes (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) provided 50 assists and senior Erin Haugen (Ft. Mill, S.C.) scooped up a team-high 20 digs. Junior Liz Windham (Wartrace, Tenn.) tallied three assists.
Sophomore Lauren Dickover (Las Vegas, Nev.) led the visitors with 43 assists and 14 digs. Junior Natalie Burns (Orlando, Fla.) chipped in with nine kills, four blocks, and two aces. Freshman Tracey Copley (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 12 digs, seven kills, and two aces. Senior Dani Usedom (Geneva, Ill.) had a team-high 19 digs while freshman Lindsey Brant (Orlando, Fla.) made 12 digs. Sophomore Katie-Marie Legg (Alta Loma, Calif.) logged a team-high five blocks.
St. Andrews travels to Conference Carolinas rival Queens University of Charlotte on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. while Lees-McRae visits league foe Anderson University on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m.
