LAURINBURG, N.C.—Sophomore setter Jaime Hayes (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) totaled 26 assists, seven digs, and one ace helping spark the St. Andrews Presbyterian College volleyball team to a 30-25, 30-24, 30-26 sweep of Conference Carolinas opponent Barton College on Thursday evening in Harris Court.
The Knights improved to 7-9 on the season and 6-2 in the conference while the Lady Bulldogs fell to 1-10 and 0-5.
St. Andrews broke away from Barton in the first game tied at 11-11 with a 5-0 run to take a 16-11 lead. The Knights stayed ahead and won the first by the same five-point margin. SAPC slowly pulled away in the second and a senior Lindsey Stansbury ( Morgan City, La.) kill gave the Knights a commanding 2-0 lead by finishing off the six-point win. Barton played its toughest game in the third holding a 23-20 lead late. However, St. Andrews finished the match on a 10-3 run capped by another Stansbury kill.
Stansbury finished with a team-high 10 kills and seven digs. Senior outside hitter Tara Lemieux (Panama City, Fla.) tallied a team-high 16 digs, eight kills, and three blocks. Sophomore Galina Podolsky (Raleigh, N.C.) added six kills and two blocks while senior libero Erin Haugen (Ft. Mill, S.C.) made 15 digs. Freshman Leah Davison (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) made a team-high four blocks and classmate Kelly Williams (Laurel, Md.) served up a team-high three aces.
Freshman Melissa Ritter (Wescosville, Pa.) led the Bulldogs with 11 kills and 10 digs. Senior Michelle Walker (Benson, N.C.) followed with 10 digs, eight kills, three blocks, and two aces while classmate Kyle Petty (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) provided five blocks and a team-high three aces. Freshmen Macon Harmon (Durham, N.C.) and Karen Riffanacht (Cheshire, Conn.) had 13 and eight assists, respectively.
St. Andrews will host a tri-match on Saturday afternoon in Harris Court. The Knights will start the day against Limestone College in a Conference Carolinas showdown at 1:00 p.m. and wrap-up the afternoon with a non-conference match against Wingate University at 5:00 p.m. Limestone and Wingate will face each other in the middle match slated for a 3:00 p.m. first serve. Barton will compete in four matches at the Anderson University Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
