All Stars rally past Knights volleyball

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Senior Tara Lemieux (Panama City, Fla.) led St. Andrews Presbyterian College 15 kills and 21 digs but the visiting Converse College volleyball team fought back from a 2-0 deficit to win the Conference Carolinas five-game thriller 17-30, 26-30, 30-18, 31-29, 15-11 on Saturday afternoon at Harris Court.

Freshman Kristen Iverson (Cammes, Wash.) led the All Stars with 28 assists, 20 digs, seven kills, and six blocks as Converse improved to 2-10 overall and 2-2 in the conference. St. Andrews dropped to 5-9 and 4-2 by hitting .084 for the match and only 18 kills in the final three games.

St. Andrews rolled the 13-point victory in the first game and gutted out a four-point win in the second frame to take a commanding 2-0 advantage in the match. Converse cut the deficit in half with a strong performance in the third winning by 12. The All Stars looked determined to tie the match in the fourth jumping out to a 9-1 lead and still leading 29-25 late. However, the Knights fought off four game points to tie everything at 29 but Converse finally tied the match by winning the next two points.

In the decisive fifth game, the All Stars kept the momentum grabbing a 10-6 lead but SAPC rallied back with five straight points to take their only lead of the final game, 11-10. Converse responded back with their own 5-0 run to end the match.

Sophomore Jaime Hayes (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) registered 39 assists, 19 digs, and three aces for the Knights. Senior Lindsey Stansbury (Morgan City, La.) totaled 11 digs and 10 kills while classmate Erin Haugen (Ft. Mill, S.C.) dug up 25 digs. Freshman Leah Davison (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) led all blockers with two solo blocks and five block assists.

Senior Melanie Wallace (San Antonio, Texas) provided a team-high 13 kills and 29 digs for the visitors. Sophomore Marisa Coleman (Roebuck, S.C.) scooped up 32 digs and had three aces. Freshman Emily Hall (Mauldin, S.C.) added 12 kills and senior Baye Williamson (Kingsport, Tenn.) chipped in with four service aces.

St. Andrews hosts Conference Carolinas foe Coker College on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. Converse visits league rival Limestone College on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
