MOUNT OLIVE, N.C.—Senior outside hitters Tara Lemieux (Panama City, Fla.) and Lindsay Stansbury (Morgan City, La.) led St. Andrews with 16 kills apiece en route to a 32-30, 31-29, 21-30, 30-27 Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball victory over host Mount Olive College at Kornegay Arena on Wednesday night.
Mount Olive fought off a combined 12 game points in the first two games and Sam Mitchell reached the 25-kill mark for the fourth time in her last four matches, but it wasn’t enough as the Trojans fell to St. Andrews 3-1.
The Lady Knights remain perfect in Conference Carolinas play at 3-0 while propelling their overall record to over .500 at 4-3.
Sophomore middle blocker Galina Podolsky (Raleigh, N.C.) shared match high honors with four service aces to go with a team-high five blocks, while freshman Leah Davison (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) added three aces. Sophomore setter Jaime Hayes (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) recorded 42 assists and senior libero Erin Haugen (Ft. Mill, S.C.0 sparked the defense with 20 digs. Lemieux and Stansbury both notched double-doubles as Lemieux finished with 17 digs and Stansbury had 15 digs. Freshman Kelly Williams (Laurel, Md.) added 11 kills for the Knights.
Mount Olive (3-6 overall, 0-1 Conference Carolinas) fell behind by as many as eight points in game one and still trailed 29-24 before Racey Bartley and Alicia Mote keyed a Trojan comeback. Mote, who served two aces during a four-point run to cut into a 22-14 deficit, had two kills and Bartley added an ace as the Trojans fought off five consecutive game points. Mount Olive saved two more game points before St. Andrews closed out the game.
The finish of game two was almost a carbon copy of the first game as St. Andrews once again built a 29-24 lead. An ace by Joanie Werling and a pair of kills by Mitchell were part of a 5-0 run as the Trojans again fought off five game points to tie the game. But the Knights got a side out and then held serve for a two-game lead.
After never having a lead in game two, Mount Olive led from the start in game three as Kari Ham sparked the Trojans with two kills and two blocks in the game. St. Andrews cut a six-point Trojan lead down to 15-14, but Mote’s kill sparked a 5-1 run and the Knights never got closer than four points the rest of the way.
Game four saw a number of lead changes and momentum swings as both teams led by as many as three points late in the match. Mount Olive used a run of five unanswered points to take a 23-20 lead, but an ace by Podolsky helped give St. Andrews a 27-24 advantage. Down 29-26, the Trojans fought off one match point, but Stansbury put home a winner down the line from the left side to end the match.
Bartley finished with 14 kills, nine blocks and four aces, while Mote tallied 14 kills, four blocks and two aces. Mariangelix Cordero recorded 27 aces and Werling finished with 24. Mallory Peavler recorded a career-high 31 digs, while Mitchell added 26 digs.
St. Andrews heads to Carrollton, Ga., Friday and Saturday to compete in the West Georgia Tournament. The Knights open up against Christian Brothers (10:00 AM) and Valdosta State (1:00 PM) on Friday and finish up against West Georgia (10:00 AM) and Eckerd (1:00 PM) on Saturday.
