Lady Knights netters remain perfect in conference play

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Freshman outside hitter Kelly Williams (Laurel, Md.) posted 10 kills and six aces to pace the St. Andrews Presbyterian College volleyball team to 30-17, 30-18, 30-28 three-game sweep of Conference Carolinas foe Queens University of Charlotte in their home opener on Wednesday night.

Sophomore setter Jaime Hayes (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) also provided 25 assists and seven digs as the Lady Knights improved to a perfect 2-0 in conference play and 3-3 overall. Junior Keatin McKenzie (Coral Springs, Fla.) led the winless Royals (0-5; 0-1) with seven digs and six kills.

SAPC rolled in the first game after grabbing a quick 11-4 lead and coasting to the 13-point win. Queens held a slim 13-12 lead in the second, before the Knights rattled off 11 straight points. Freshman Leah Davison (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.), who finished with a game-high seven aces, served up several aces in the run as St. Andrews took the second by 12 points.

The Royals were on the brink of forcing a fourth game with a late 28-26 advantage in the third stanza, but St. Andrews finished off the match scoring the final four points.

Senior Lindsey Stansbury (Morgan City, La.) and sophomore Galina Podolsky ( Raleigh, N.C.) each provided six kills for the Knights. Podolsky added a team-high four blocks while Stansbury had six digs and two blocks.

Senior Dee Dee Matthews (Odenton, Md.) supplied four kills and three blocks for the visitors. Junior Sarah Burt (Pensacola, Fla.) and sophomore Amanda Valbert (Champaign, Ill.) led the Royals with 28 and 17 assists, respectively. Senior Ebony Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) added a team-high nine digs while junior Veronica Arenander (Cincinnati, Ohio) chipped in with four digs, three kills, and two blocks.

St. Andrews returns to action on Wednesday, September 5 at Conference Carolinas rival Mount Olive College at 6:30 p.m. Queens will compete in the Wingate University Volleyball Classic this weekend.
