Anderson volleyball sweeps Knights, 3-0

LAURINBURG, NCFreshman Mandie Stewart’s (Simpsonville, SC) 13 digs and three services aces guided Anderson College to a 3-0 (30-24, 33-31, 30-24) Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference volleyball win over host St. Andrews in Harris Court Saturday.

The Lady Trojans (12-16 overall, 7-7 CVAC) took a substantial 27-17 lead in the first game, but the Knights (2-21, 2-14) rallied with five straight points to make it interesting. AC called a time out at 27-22 to end the run, and held for the 30-24 win to take the 1-0 advantage.

SAPC jumped out early to an 11-4 lead in the second frame, but the Trojans slowly cut into the deficit and tied the game at 21 apiece. Dani Ghramm (Hayden, ID) and Lauren McManus (Raleigh, NC) gave the Knights two chances at game point (29-28 and 30-29) but Anderson held on each time.

The Trojans failed at their first attempt at game-point after Maggie Irvin (Spartanburg, SC) served up an ace. However, a St. Andrews service error gave AC another chance. This time the Trojans converted with a block by Beth Lawson (Simpsonville, SC) to take the commanding two-game lead with a 33-31 win.

Anderson grabbed a quick 12-6 lead in the decisive game but the Knights hung in and got as close as one, 24-23, late. However, an Amanda Edwards (Azle, TX) block capped a 6-1 run by the Trojans and to end the match at 30-24.

Swain had a team-high 13 kills for Anderson and Irvin made 15 digs. Laura Tye (Anderson, SC) chipped in with eight kills and five blocks while Leanna Willis (Saluda, SC) added 14 digs. Setter Jessica Pedrick (Spartanburg, SC) supplied 30 assists and Lawson stuffed five blocks.

Junior Jesi Bewley (Cincinnati, OH) spiked a game-high 17 kills for the Knights. Junior setter Kim Harper (Boca Raton, FL) posted 29 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore libero Erin Haugen (Ft. Mills, SC) one again recorded over 30-plus digs scooping up 34. Ghramm blasted 10 kills and McManus added eight.

The Knights visit CVAC rival Queens University of Charlotte on Monday at 6:30 p.m. while Anderson visits CVAC foe Converse Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
