Knights netters dig out 3-1 win over Bulldogs

LAURINBURG, NCAfter Barton tied the match up at 1-1, the St. Andrews Presbyterian College volleyball team played its to most dominating back-to-back games of the year to win Tuesday’s Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference showdown in Harris Court by a 3-1 final (31-29, 21-30, 30-14, 30-21).

It was the Knights second win of the year and snapped a 15-match drought that dated back to August 31. SAPC improved to 2-19 overall and 2-12 in the CVAC while the Lady Bulldogs fell to 7-20 and 5-10.

In the closest game of the match, Keauna Vinson (Zebulon, NC) tied everything at 29-29 with a kill for the Bulldogs, but on the ensuing plays Barton had a hitting attempt sail long and block fall wide to give St. Andrews the first game, 31-29.

Barton rallied back with their best game; taking its largest lead at 25-15 and coasting to the 30-21 win that squared the match at one apiece.

The third game started close with the Knights holding a slim 9-7 advantage, but St. Andrews smoked the Bulldogs for 21 of the final 28 points to win its best game of the year, 30-14. The Knights maintained the momentum and won the decisive game, 30-21, on a Dani Ghramm (Hayden, ID) spike that found the back, left corner of the court.

Junior middle blocker Jesi Bewley (Cincinnati, OH) led the Knights with 21 kills, 16 digs, and a season-high eight service aces. Junior setter Kim Harper (Boca Raton, FL) posted 33 assists and 15 digs. Sophomore libero Erin Haugen (Ft. Mills, SC) reached 40 digs for the first time this year and Ghramm blasted 11 kills. Junior Lauren McManus (Raleigh, NC) added 11 digs, six kills and four aces.

Vinson led Barton with 22 kills, 22 digs, and four blocks. Laurie Alpert (Virginia Beach, VA) scooped up 33 digs and Kari Poling (Reed City, MI) assisted 33 times.

St. Andrews hosts CVAC powerhouse Lees-McRae on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and CVAC foe Anderson on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Bulldogs travel to Pennsylvania for the Shippensburg Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
