LAURINBURG, NC—St. Andrews had little time to get over a close five-game loss to Limestone by taking on a talented Eckerd College (St. Petersburg, FL) squad, which is ranked No. 7 in the South Region, 90 minutes later. The Tritons felt little mercy and won the non-conference match in three-game (30-26, 30-27, 30-20).
Eckerd ended a three-match skid to improve to 10-8 while the Knights fell to 1-16.
St. Andrews came out strong holding the lead for most of the first game. The Knights held the lead as late as 23-21 but the Tritons scored six consecutive points, five on Shannon Ruby serves, to propel to the 30-26 win.
Again, the Knights grabbed the early advantage at 13-10 but Eckerd chipped away at the deficit and regained the lead at 17-16. From that point the Tritons maintained a slim lead that they would hold on to take the commanding lead in the match winning the second, 30-27.
The final frame looked like it would be close just like the first two games with Eckerd hanging on to a small 19-17 lead. But the Tritons scored 11 of the final 14 points in the match ending the day with a 30-20 win.
Junior setter Alex Arendell let the Tritons with a team-high 25 assists and 11 digs. Angela White had a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Andrea Krzystan spiked 12 kills while Kati Therriault followed with 10 kills. Leah Melton added six kills, four block assists, and two solo blocks.
Knights Kim Harper and Erin Haugen tied each other with 17 digs apiece. Jesi Bewley totaled 14 kills, nine digs, three aces and two solo blocks. Harper supplied 29 assists while Lauren McManus just missed the double-double with 10 digs and nine kills.
The Knights travel to Lees-McRae on Tuesday for a makeup game that is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. while Eckerd travels to Coker on Monday at 6:00 p.m.
