Knights netters swept in opening tourney

FLORENCE, SC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College volleyball team dropped its first four matches of the 2005 season at the Joseph B. DuRant Memorial Invitational Tournament hosted by Francis Marion on Friday and Saturday.

St. Andrews vs. West Georgia

Junior Lauren McManus (Raleigh, NC) led the Knights with nine digs in St. Andrews opening match of the season on Friday afternoon, but the University of West Georgia improved to 2-0 with the 30-18, 30-17, 30-26 victory.

Junior Jesi Bewley (Cincinnati, OH) and freshman Dani Ghramm (Hayden, ID) tied for a team-high seven kills followed by freshman Liz Windham’s (Wartrace, TN) five kills. Junior setter Kim Harper (Boca Raton, FL) provided 19 assists and six digs. Sophomore’s Erin Haugen (Ft. Mills, SC) and Allison Hendrix (Hickory, NC) had seven digs apiece.

St. Andrews vs. Wingate

In Friday’s nightcap, Haugen made a team-high 14 digs in the Knights 3-0 (30-21, 30-14, 30-25) loss to Wingate (2-0).

Bewley ripped nine kills and had 10 digs. Harper set up the Knights attackers with 17 assists and made eight digs. Ghramm added in with five kills and eight digs while Hendrix supplied nine digs. Sophomore Jackie Cromer (Greensboro, NC) chipped in with a block and a kill.

 

St. Andrews vs. California, Pa.

In Saturday morning’s rematch of last years first round game of the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship, California University of Pennsylvania (3-0) swept the young St. Andrews squad by game scores of 30-23, 30-18, 30-25.

Harper led the Knights with 19 assists, 11 digs, five kills, five block assists, four service aces and one solo block. Bewley spiked eight kills and had a four combined blocks. Ghramm added seven kills and 10 digs while McManus dug up 11 Vulcan kill attempts.

St. Andrews vs. NC Central

The Knights almost completed a five-game comeback on NC Central (2-2) in the tournament finale after falling behind 0-2 but the Eagles held on for the 3-2 (30-24, 30-22, 22-30, 28-30, 15-12) victory.

Bewley led the St. Andrews attack with 17 kills, 10 digs, four assists and two blocks. Harper followed with 35 assists, 17 digs, 8 kills and two aces. McManus added 11 digs, 10 kills and a team-high five service aces. Ghramm contributed with 13 digs, 10 kills and four aces. Hendrix made 15 digs and Windham chipped in with six kills.

The Knights (0-4) begin the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference portion of their schedule on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in their home-opener against Queens University of Charlotte.
