SAPC men's swimmers coast to first victory

ASHEVILLE, N.C.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s swim team won all 11 events on Sunday en route to the program’s first victory, defeating host Warren Wilson College 102-29. The day before SAPC dropped a 163-70 meet at Mars Hill College.

A quartet of Knights freshman won two races apiece helping the visitors to the 73-point victory over the Owls. SAPC improved to 1-4 with a pair of wins from Dwight Richardson (Newport News, Va.), Adam Crago (Amherst, Va.), Joseph Hernandez (Hubert, N.C.), and Brad Kochel (Winchester, Va.).

Kochel posted personal record (PR) wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle with times of 23:29 and 53.63, respectively. Senior Ian Burkett (Columbia, S.C.) also competed in the 50 (30.39) and 100 (1:08.73) freestyle.

Hernandez took care of the distance races for St. Andrews winning the 1000 freestyle (13:41.31) and the 500 freestyle (6:35.29).

Richardson followed suit winning the 100 butterfly with a PR of 58.24 and the 200 individual medley by stopping the clock in 2:11.20.

Crago added his own PR in the 100 backstroke at 1:02.02 while earning his second victory in the 200 freestyle (2:02.37).

Freshman Robb Vermillion (Williamsburg, Va.) also made a splash for the Knights by winning the 100 breaststroke. Vermillion just missed breaking his school record in the event with a speed of 1:10.97 while also competing in the 200 freestyle (2:25.21).

The Knights capped the sweep of Warren Wilson when Richardson, Crago, Hernandez, and Kochel teamed up for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:41.08).

On Saturday, the small and young St. Andrews men’s swim team competed in its first-ever 14-event dual meet against Mars Hill and still gutted out three wins.

Kochel and Richardson highlighted the Knights results by each winning a race and finish second in two other events. Kochel won the 100 backstroke with a PR of 58.48 while finishing second in the 200 backstroke (2:12.98) and 100 butterfly (1:00.11). Richardson was victorious in the 50 freestyle (22.42) while garnering runner-up showing in the 200 freestyle (1:51.76/school record) and the 200 individual medley (2:08.33).

Vermillion also set the SAPC benchmark in the 200 breaststroke by defeating a trio of Mountain Lions with a time of 2:34.19. Other PR’s were set against MHC by Burkett in the 200 freestyle (2:39.59) and Crago in the 100 freestyle (53.67).

In relay competition, the Knights aquatic athletes set new school records in a pair of team events. Kochel, Vermillion, Crago, and Richardson concluded the 200 medley relay in 1:47.44 while Crago, Vermillion, Burkett, and Hernandez concluded the afternoon with a 4:10.16 speed in the 400 freestyle relay.

St. Andrews will be off for the holiday break and will hit the pool once again in the spring semester when they visit Wingate University on Saturday, January 26 in a double-dual meet with Lenoir-Rhyne College.
