December 11, 2006

LAURINBURG, N.C.—St. Andrews Presbyterian College Athletic Director Howard Reichner has announced the addition of intercollegiate men’s and women’s swimming to the college’s list of NCAA Division II sponsored sports beginning in the fall of 2007.

“With St. Andrews enjoying a growing enrollment each year of the last four, we welcome the addition of women’s and men’s swimming to our field of competitive athletics,” said Reichner.

Swimming can add up to 30 student-athletes at St. Andrews; who will compete in invitationals, relays and dual meets during the NCAA winter season. The aquatic Knights will compete in a full range of swimming disciplines including ones of varying distances and stroke styles.

“Swimmers are known for their dedication and hard work in the classroom as well as the pool,” expressed Reichner. “We look forward to getting these student-athletes on the St. Andrews campus.”

The St. Andrews athletics department expects to make an announcement of the first NCAA Division II men’s and women’s swimming coach in the near future. SAPC will bring in the inaugural coach in the spring of 2007 to start recruiting for the 2007/08 season.

The Knights will compete in the Bluegrass Mountain Conference (BGMC) and as an NCAA Division II competitor. The BGMC currently has 12 colleges in its conference including Wingate University, Pfeiffer University, Catawba College, Limestone College, Savannah Art & Design, Washington & Lee, West Virginia Wesleyan, Wheeling Jesuit, Fairmont State, Asbury, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and Transylvania.
