Game 1; Game 2
LAURINBURG, NC—For the third straight NCAA Division II women’s softball doubleheader, St. Andrews earned a doubleheader split with their opponent by winning the second game. After Pfeiffer University won the first Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference game, 5-1, the Knights blanked the Lady Falcons 4-0 in Wednesday’s finale.
The Knights hold an 8-24 overall and 4-12 CVAC record while the Lady Falcons’ ledger reads 13-32 and 7-11.
St. Andrews concludes the regular-season portion of their schedule with a CVAC doubleheader at Lees-McRae College (Banner Elk, NC) on Tuesday, April 18 at 3:00 p.m. Pfeiffer entertains CVAC foe Erskine on Friday at 1:00 p.m.
Game 1 (7 innings)
The Lady Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a single run in each of the first two innings. Sophomore Jaimee Cassidy’s (Fuquay-Varina, NC) infield single that drove in freshman Brittany Cowart (Concord, NC) started the scoring in the first while a Jessica Culler (Rural Hall, NC) double in the second plated the next run. Cassidy doubled the Pfeiffer lead with a two-run homerun to right in the third.
Junior Devane Rushing (Monroe, NC) got St. Andrews on the scoreboard with a solo homer to left in the fourth. Rushing’s fourth blast of the season made it 4-1.
Pfeiffer added an unearned run in the sixth to produce the final 5-1 margin. Sophomore Falcon starter Dacia Ijames (Kernersville, NC) allowed just one run on six hits while striking out three in the complete-game victory.
Freshman Brittni York (Indian Trail, NC) went the distance for SAPC, giving up five runs on 10 hits. Sophomore Mika Tanji (Honolulu, HI) had a team-high two hits while freshman Dani Ghramm’s (Lake City, ID) double was the Knights only other extra-base hit.
Game 2 (7 innings)
After battling off several pitches, Tanji led off the first with a single to center and then scored on a senior Amme Mason (Georgetown, CA) single to left to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead in the nightcap.
A throwing error by the Lady Falcons to start the fifth led to three unearned runs for St. Andrews. Tanji, who reached on the initial error, scored on a sacrifice fly by Rushing. Freshman starter Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo, NY) helped herself out with a two-run bomb to left-center to cap the run and extend the SAPC advantage to 4-0. It was Dobmeier’s second home run in three games.
The four runs were more than enough for Dobmeier, who only scattered three hits in her first collegiate complete-game shutout. Dobmeier fanned four Falcon batters in her fourth victory of the season.
Freshman Amanda Beck (Thomasville, NC) took the loss allowing four runs (three unearned) on five hits while striking out five in 6.0 innings of work.
Tanji led the Knights with four hits on the day while Rushing and Dobmeier each had two RBI.
