Knights Hit it out of the Park, Three TimesFebruary 3, 2012 Laurinburg, NC- St. Andrews softball put on a spectacular showing for the fans at Knights Field this afternoon as they hosted Fayetteville State University for today’s double-header. The Knights started off the afternoon with a 9-1 win as they kept the Broncos from crossing home plate until the top of the sixth inning. SAU continued to play well and pulled away from the Broncos early in game two to finish the day with a 16-3 game two victory. Game 1 The Royal Blue and White wasted no time this afternoon, putting up three runs during their first at bat. Holding the Broncos, the Knights increased their lead to six after using intelligent base running to get around the diamond in the third inning. The ladies put up three more runs as the game went on, giving them the lead that they needed to finish the game in the sixth inning. Freshman Jessie Wiegers (Martinez, GA) stayed focused in the circle; only giving up six hits. Wiegers struck out four batters and was able to keep the ball over the plate and finished the game without walking a single batter. As a team, the Knights blasted 17 hits against the Broncos in Game 1. The ladies also knocked in eight RBI’s. Junior Vanessa Giacomin (Richmond Hill, Canada), sophomore Alyssa Carlson (Chesapeake, VA), and freshman Kelsey Lee (Erwin, NC) each earned a double in Game 1, with teammate Mary Cross (Middleburg, FL) picking up a triple. Game 2 SAU came out swinging in Game 2 of today’s series. After a quick first inning, both teams remained scoreless. FSU used four solid hits in the second inning to send a runner across the plate and put up the first run of the game. The Knights fought back and proved to be too much for the Broncos to handle.
FSU added two more runs in the top of the third, but their efforts were not enough to surpass the Knights as SAU would cross the plate six more times before the end of the game. Helping move the Knights around the bags, Lex Cowger (Indian Head, MD) and Joanna Asenjo (San Diego, CA) each crushed a double for St. Andrews, while Lee added two doubles to her stats. Whitney Hill (Morehead City, NC), Cross, Lee, and Asenjo stayed alert while running and stole several bases for St. Andrews (3, 2, 2, and 1 respectively). The Knights have a few days off before their next double-header. St. Andrews will host the Mercyhurst Lakers on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 1:30 PM as the Knights try to increase their winning streak to four. -GO KNIGHTS-
