"Living on campus is a life experience I have learned so much from. We eat together, watch TV together, study together, and do absolutely nothing together. When I go home for breaks, it’s like I’m leaving my second family!"

Laurinburg, NC- The Knights hosted the Eagles of Carson-Newman College this afternoon as St. Andrews started the 2012 softball season. SAU threw the first pitch of the afternoon, getting things rolling for the double-header. The Royal Blue and White fought through an extra inning after tying the game in the bottom of the seventh. Unable to cross the plate again, the Knights fell 7-6 in Game 1. Carson Newman came out with their bats swinging as they rallied to defeat the Knights in Game 2 with a final score of 10-2.

Game 1

St. Andrews put the first runs on the board this afternoon by moving players around the bases in the first inning; giving SAU a 2-0 lead until the third inning, when they added another run. The Eagles responded, but could not pass the Knights at first. Carson Newman started off the 6 th inning with a homerun by Bethany Davis and proceeded to use the energy generated by Davis to score three additional runs.

The Knights tied it up in the bottom of the seventh after Amanda VanKleeck (Deltona, FL) knocked in two RBI’s. SAU saw the Eagles cross the plate once in the 8 th after a solid hit to the left side, but could not manage to move a Knight around the bases to catch up; ending the game at 7-6 in favor of the Eagles.

The ladies of St. Andrews dished out seven hits and five RBI’s in Game 1. Freshman Jessie Wiegers (Martinez, GA) stood strong in the circle for St. Andrews as she pitched the entire eight inning game. Erwin, NC, native Kelsey Lee was the only Knight to cross the plate two times in game one; using her speed and intelligent base running to move around the diamond.

Game 2

SAU got a slow start in Game 2 after the Eagles put up seven runs in the first inning. Carson Newman put on a big showing after the close battle in Game 1. The Eagles sent in 10 total runs in Game 2 and only gave up one hit. Mary Shealy grabbed her second win of the day after pitching an almost perfect game for Carson Newman.

Lee came up to the plate determined to get on base and knocked the first St. Andrews hit of the game to center field in the bottom of the fifth. Lee and VanKleeck were the only Knights to score in Game 2. VanKleeck made her way to first after the Carson Newman shortstop bobbled the ball, giving the Knights their second base appearance of the game. Working their way from base to base, these two ladies put the Knights on the board for a final score of 10-2.

The Knights will be back in action tomorrow as they host Fayetteville State University at Knights field on the campus of St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, NC. The double-header is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM.
