Laurinburg, N.C. – The Lady Knights (4-31 2-14) suffered a rough weekend at the ball park as they dropped both match ups against Chowan University (26-17). Though the Knights hit the ball well they just could not seem to put runs on the board when they were needed.
Game one showed a quick start for Chowan as they held St. Andrews scoreless for two innings while they put together six runs of their own. The Lady Knights answered back in the bottom of the third as Natalie Whitman (North Tonawanda, NY) and Kim Baird (Lexington, GA) hit back to back singles. Ashley Disque (Prince Frederick, MD) then dug in and ripped a double bringing in both base runners cutting the Chowan lead to 6-2. Chowan went to score their final run in the 4th inning giving St. Andrews a fighting chance to make a comeback. The 5th inning proved to be crucial for the Knights as both Whitman and Baird reached base again, but this time it was Tiffany Harris (Columbia, SC) who drove a single into the field and brought them both home making the score now 7-4 lead in favor of Chowan. The Lady Knights had the momentum now, but sadly could not find a way to add any more runs to their total subsequently losing the match-up 7-4.
The second contest proved to be a duel defensively as each teams came out on their games. Chowan was doing a good job of hitting the ball, but the Knights fielding was tremendous as they found ways to prevent runs. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 4th when Brandie Hunt (Franklin, VA) drove in the game’s first run, putting St. Andrews on top 1-0. The Lady Knights would not add to their run tally for the rest of the day, but they kept up their stellar defense until the 7th inning. Chowan then seemed to hit everything, as they strung together hit after hit totaling in three runs putting the game out of reach for St. Andrews. The Lady Knights ended up losing by the score of 3-1. Playing well for the Knights was Megan Soots (Mt. Holly, NC) who went 2-4 behind the plate. St. Andrews takes the field next on Wednesday afternoon as they square off against Lees McRae College in a doubleheader at home, games starting at 2 p.m.
