Laurinburg, N.C. - The Lady Knights (4-29) welcomed the Braves of UNC Pembroke to the diamond Friday to square of in seven innings of softball action. Both teams had big innings scoring multiple runs, but in the end it was Pembroke who grabbed the victory after a seventh inning outburst.
The Lady Knights got things going first as they put up two runs in the games opening inning. Ashley Disque (Prince Frederick, VA) was the first to cross home plate after a passed ball error, then Tiffany Harris (Columbia, SC) made it home after Alyssa Carlson (Chesapeake, VA) doubled to left field giving the Lady Knights an early 2-0 lead. The Braves wasted no time to respond as they out scored St. Andrews 3-0 in the next two innings taking a 3-2 lead, though the Lady Knights would not waiver. The third inning St. Andrews made some impressive plays to score, including an RBI double from Brandie Hunt (Franklin, VA) and Tiffany Harris (Columbia, SC) managed to steal home base giving the Lady Knights the lead again, score being 4-0. Pembroke; however, regained control and put six runs on the board during the next three innings while holding St. Andrews to zero runs, extending there lead to now 9-4. The Lady Knights were down, but not out, came back at the Braves with their most explosive inning of the contest, scoring three runs while Kim Baird (Lexington, GA), Natalie Whitman (North Tonawanda, NY), and Ashley Disque (Prince Frederick, MD) all compiled hits shrinking the gap to a 9-7 defecit. The seventh inning proved to be a tough one for the Lady Knights as Pembroke put on a hitting clinic adding six runs to there total putting the game out of reach for St. Andrews who could only add one more run. After seven innings of softball, the Lady Knights fell to the Braves by the score of 15-8.
Leading the way for the Knights were Natalie Whitman and Brandie Hunt who both had mulitple hit games going 2-4 from behind the plate.
