Hartsville, S.C. – The Lady Knights (3-18, 1-7) battled it out with The Coker Cobras (10-11, 3-3) Monday in a Conference Carolinas duel in which both teams left the ball field with a win. The split included some solid play from the mound and in the field for both squads.
Game One: Coker came out in the first three innings giving up only two hits. Freshman Tiffany Harris (Columbia, SC) singled to center field, while Junior Ashley Disque (Prince Frederick, MD) singled down the right field line in the thirdwith neither hits leading to runs. St. Andrews had a shutout going themselves until the third when Coker put together two hits of their own, one being a single which drove a run in putting the Cobras on top 1-0. Coker went on to score more runs including one in the fourth after a single zipped up the left side and two runs in the fifth to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Cobras. St. Andrews, after three innings with no offense managed to strike for two more hits in the seventh as Freshman Brandie Hunt (Franklin, VA) doubled to left field and Freshman Alyssa Carlson (Chesapeake, VA) singled to right field giving the Knights some daylight. Coker then tightened up their pitching and struck out St. Andrews final batter ending the game with the score of 4-0 in favor of Coker.
Game Two: The Knights shook off the game one disappointment and showed courage, determination, and resilience as they battled Coker in another seven inning slugfest. St. Andrews came out swinging the bat well, ringing up three hits in the first all being singles by Junior Lex Cowger (Indian Head, MD), Freshman Tiffany Harris (Columbia, SC), and Freshman Brandie Hunt (Franklin, VA). Though they were locating the ball well they could not seem to put any runs on the board. Defensively the Knights were a steel trap allowing zero runs and zero hits thru four innings. The Cobras did not touch the ball until the fifth when Coker put together two hits, none of which leading to a run. The sixth inning proved to be the deciding inning as St. Andrews started things off with a Tiffany Harris double. Senior Becca Knott (Jacksonville, NC) then followed with a sacrifice bunt which moved Harris into great scoring position at third. Freshman Megan Soots (Mt. Holly, NC) then reached first on a fielder’s choice which brought Harris home for the games only run, and a win for the Knights. St. Andrews pitcher Ashley Disque gave up only four hits on her way to her third win of the season. The Knights take the field next at home on Tuesday where they square off in a doubleheader against Mars Hill College games starting at 2 p.m.
