PEMBROKE, N.C.—St. Andrews Presbyterian College was held to just six hits in a 9-1 loss to No. 14 nationally ranked Kutztown University in an early morning showdown Sunday in the inaugural UNC Pembroke Softball Invitational.
The Golden Bears (2-1) -- who were eliminated in the 2009 NCAA Super Regional to eventual national champion Lock Haven University -- continued to show its power to start 2010 scoring nine runs on 11 hits in the five-inning victory Sunday.
The Knights (0-3) outfield provided most of the team’s offense collecting five of the squad’s six hits. Freshman Kendra Norton (Marshall, N.C.) scored the Knights only run in the fourth inning as SAPC took advantage of a couple Kutztown errors. Norton also had a single in the second. Senior Morgan Farroll (Newton Grove, N.C.) and freshman Eryn Wiley (Fredericksburg, Va.) each had a pair of singles.
Kutztown did most of its damage at the top of the order as freshman leadoff batter Marisa Isgro was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI-triple. Senior Maria Schiavo followed in the two spot driving in two runs on a trio of singles.
Junior starter Monica Glomb (1-0) kept the Knights batters at bay allowing one unearned run on six hits while striking out a game-high five batters. St. Andrews’ senior counterpart Daisy Mendez (Miami, Fla.) took the pitchers circle for the first time since the 2008 season, allowing nine runs (six earned) on 11 hits over four innings of work. Mendez (0-1) had fanned three.
The Knights put their leadoff batter on base in three of five innings but twice were stymied as Bears’ freshman catcher Katie Lynch threw out the base runner attempting to try stealing second base. SAPC left seven on base.
Lynch and sophomore Nicole Henninger both knocked in two Kutztown runs.
