PEMBROKE, N.C.—St. Andrews Presbyterian College outhit West Virginia State University, 7-6, as the temperatures dipped below freezing in Saturday’s last game of the UNC Pembroke Softball Invitational at LRA Field but a late rally lifted the Yellow Jackets to a 4-2 win.

WVSU (2-0) was the only team out of five institutions to stay undefeated in the first day of the round-robin tournament after scoring two runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Lady Knights (0-2) totaled seven hits for the second straight game.

Senior third baseman Danyell Marquez (Riverside, Calif.) led St. Andrews with a pair of singles. Sophomore Kaitlin Harris (Acworth, Ga.) and freshman Eryn Wiley (Fredericksburg, Va.) drove in the Knights two runs scoring seniors Nicole Bailey (Lumberton, N.C.) and Brianna Shurtleff (Colton, Calif.).

St. Andrews broke a scoreless tie in the third inning to take the first lead, 1-0. Bailey and sophomore Lex Cowger (Indian Head, Md.) led off with back-to-back singles before a groundout by Harris plated Bailey.

The Yellow Jackets tallied two runs in both the fourth and sixth to jump ahead, 4-1. Freshman Alexa Marci (Huntington, W.Va.) led West Virginia State offensively going 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBI.

Wiley’s first collegiate hit, a seeing-eyed single through the right-side of the infield, scored the Knights second run during a seventh inning rally attempt. Shurtleff led off with a single and a stolen base before scoring on Wiley’s base knock.

Junior starter Margaret Osborne (St. Albans, W.Va.) ended SAPC’s comeback by getting the final two outs with a pop-up and a groundout as she put together the complete-game victory. Yellow Jacket classmate Bobbi Harper (Ironton, Ohio) had the games only extra base hit with an RBI-double in the fourth.

Knights’ sophomore Ashley Disque (Prince Frederick, Md.) gutted out her second consecutive complete game in the freezing temperatures Saturday but was tagged with the loss.

St. Andrews wraps up tournament play at the UNCP Invite with a pair of games on Sunday. The Knights take the field against No. 14 Kutztown University on Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. followed by a rematch against West Virginia State University at 12:30 p.m.
