HARTSVILLE, S.C.—Host and No. 8 seed Coker College scored runs in five of seven innings to knockoff surging No. 6 seed St. Andrews Presbyterian College 13-7 on Championship Sunday in the 2009 Conference Carolinas Softball Tournament. Senior Megan Riggs (Hubert, N.C.) and sophomore Jasmine Dobbin (Pikeville, N.C.) were both selected to the All-Tournament team for the Lady Knights.
SAPC advanced to the final day of the Conference Carolinas Tournament for the second straight year finishing fourth overall out of 11 teams. The Lady Knights end their season with a 21-27 record while posting the program’s most overall wins (21) and conference wins (8) since the 2004 season.
Riggs capped a huge weekend for St. Andrews by going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Dobbin also was 2-for-4 with a game-high three runs scored and two stolen bases. Riggs and Dobbin were honored as 2009 All-Tournament selections after their outstanding play in five tourney games.
Freshman Lex Cowger (Indian Head, Md.) and junior Danyell Marquez (Riverside, Calif.) each drove in a pair of runs for the Royal Blue & White.
Coker's Sydney Greenwalt picked up the win in relief, allowing three runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings, while junior Sarah Applegarth (Gainesville, Ga.) took the loss, allowing eight runs on 12 hits with five strikeouts in five innings of work. Offensively, Applegarth had a double and an RBI.
Allie Bragg had a perfect game going 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, while Miranda Klees, Anna Oswald and Whitney Wallett all had three hits, with Klees driving in two. Shannon Mitchell had a home run and two RBIs and Brittany Owens had two hits and two RBIs.
Coker advances to face No. 2 seed Mount Olive College at noon, with the winner advancing to face No. 4 seed Queens University of Charlotte in the championship game.
