NEWBERRY, S.C.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader in South Carolina for the second straight day on Sunday. This time the Lady Knights lost 12-4 and 4-0 to non-conference foe Newberry College.

Junior Danyell Marquez (pictured) hit two solo home runs this past weekend increasing her team-high totals to six homers and 27 RBI. Marquez paces the Knights with a .684 slugging percentage.

Newberry (21-6 overall) have won five straight games after sweeping a doubleheader from the Knights (13-18) for the second times this season.

Freshman Kaitlin Harris (Acworth, Ga.) and junior Sarah Applegarth (Gainesville, Ga.) were the only two SAPC batters to get a hit in both games. Sophomore Jasmine Dobbin (Pikeville, N.C.) finished the day with only two official at bats going 1-for-2 after also providing two walks, one hit-by-pitch, one sacrifice fly, and one sac bunt. Dobbin also had the Knights only stolen base.

St. Andrews returns home for a Conference Carolinas clash against Belmont Abbey College on Wednesday with the double dip starting at 2 p.m.

GAME ONE: Newberry 12, St. Andrews 4 (6 innings)
Box Score; Play-By-Play

Newberry broke a 3-3 tie after four innings with two runs in the fifth and seven more in the sixth en route to the 12-4 victory in the opener. NC scored 12 runs on 13 hits and junior Amanda Huckestein highlighted the sixth inning outburst with a three-run double. Amanda Huckestein eventually scored to end the game with the NCAA eight-run rule.

For the second straight day, junior Danyell Marquez (Riverside, Calif.) tagged a solo home run for St. Andrews. Marquez has six long balls on the season tying her six home run total from her freshman season of 2007. In the past six years, no SAPC player has hit seven home runs in a season (Tina Gonsalves also hit six home runs in 2004).

The Lady Knights took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third with a pair of runs on a sacrifice by Dobbin and a RBI-double by senior Tiffany Capone (Jacksonville, N.C.). Newberry rallied into the lead with three runs in the home half before senior Dani Ghramm (Hayden, Idaho) deadlocked the score with a single in the fourth that plated Marquez.

Newberry took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth. SAPC attempted another comeback in the sixth as Marquez led off the stanza with a blast over the centerfield fence that cut the deficit in half, 5-4. The Knights put two more runners on base but Huckestein entered the game and got Newberry out of the jam. Huckestein was credited with a save for the winning pitcher, junior starter Kristen Hicks.

Freshman Ashley Disque (Prince Frederick, Md.) went the distance for St. Andrews but was tagged with the loss. Only five of the 12 runs that Disque (4-12) allowed were earned. Capone and Marquez accounted for half of the Knights eight hits with two base knocks apiece.

GAME TWO: Newberry 4, St. Andrews 0
Box Score; Play-By-Play

Huckestein (11-2) tossed a four-hit, complete-game shutout in the nightcap as Newberry completed the sweep with a 4-0 victory.

The Knights left seven runners on base as they were unable to get the clutch hits to drive in the runs. The Knights best scoring chance came in the third inning when a trio of singles by Harris, Dobbin, and Applegarth loaded the bases. Dobbin reached base in all three of her plate appearances.

Applegarth (9-5) only allowed two earned runs in her six-inning, complete game but took the loss with no run support.

After three scoreless innings in the pitchers dual, Newberry got on the board with two unearned runs in the fourth before doubling up its lead with two more runs in the sixth.
