Knights Softball Wins Third, Fourth Straight At Patriot Invitational

FLORENCE, S.C.—Sophomore Jasmine Dobbin (Pikeville, N.C.) provided St. Andrews Presbyterian College with four hits and six RBI in two victories on Sunday in the final day of the 2009 Patriot Invitational at the Freedom Florence Softball Complex hosted by Francis Marion University. The Knights defeated Tusculum for the second straight time, 6-4, before concluding play with an 11-3 win over Lander University.

The Knights had eight different players hit safely in both games as St. Andrews improves to 10-11 on the season. Senior Megan Riggs (Hubert, N.C.), junior Sarah Applegarth (Gainesville, Ga.), junior Brianna Shurtleff (Colton, Calif.), and freshman Ashley Disque (Prince Frederick, Md.) all collected three hits on the day.

Junior Danyell Marquez (Riverside, Calif.) had a hit in each contest extending her current hit streak to 11 games. Classmate Morgan Farroll (Newton Grove, N.C.) provided one hit in both games while freshman Kaitlin Harris (Acworth, Ga.) had a single in each showdown.

Disque and Applegarth both pitched their second straight complete game victory for the Knights. Applegarth (7-4) had the win against Tusculum while Disque (3-7) defeated Lander.

St. Andrews begins Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday when they travel to Coker College (Hartsville, S.C.) at 2 p.m.

GAME ONE: St. Andrews 6, Tusculum 4

St. Andrews jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first two innings and held on for the two-run victory, defeating Tusculum for a second straight day.

Dobbin had two of the Knights nine hits. Farroll put the Knights on the board with a two-run double in the first while Marquez hit a lead-off solo home run in the second to extend their lead to 3-0. Marquez has a team-high four homers. SAPC added two runs in the fifth including a sacrifice fly by Harris while Riggs added an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI-single.

Applegarth allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits in the complete-game victory. Applegarth had one strikeout and zero walks in her seventh win.

GAME TWO:
St. Andrews 11, Lander 3
Box Score; Play-By-Play

St. Andrews was clinging to a 4-3 lead before pulling away to the eight-run victory over Lander University with two runs in the sixth and five runs in the seventh. SAPC slugged a season-best 15 hits in the victory including hits by all nine starters.

Dobbin accounted for most of the Knights offense driving in six runs with a three-run homer in the third, a two-run single in the sixth, and a sac fly in the seventh.

Riggs was 2-for-2 and rounded the bases a game-high three times while adding one RBI. Shurtleff was 2-for-3 and knocked in two St. Andrews runs. Senior Tiffany Capone (Jacksonville, N.C.) had a pair of hits. Capone and classmate Dani Ghramm (Hayden, Idaho) each collected one RBI.

Disque shutdown the Bearcats on the mound allowing just three runs (two earned) on six hits in seven innings of work. Disque registered one strikeout and zero walks in her third victory.
